Hopefully the long-range plan that is building up Thanos will make the disposable villains worth it. Best part of Thor 2 was the first bonus scene during the credits.

Just watched this. For someone who knows nothing about the comics at all, what is the significance of the collector guy in the scene after the credits? And what happened to the red(Thanos?) guy at the end of the last Thor movie, why wasn't he in the sequel?

for someone who doesn't know comics, here are some things.
this is the MCU(marvel cinema universe) which encompasses all the marvel movies and agents of shield, the current comic universe (non alternate stuff) is known as 616. There is also another universe called "The Ultimate Universe" which is a more modern version of comics (and of 616) and a tad bit more gritty and i generally where most of the MCU is probably based off of (case in point black nick fury).

so you have
MCU
616
Ultimate

in 616 the collector is part of the Elders of the Universe, these i guess are "eccentric" beings that are immortal, and the collector's eccentricity is to "collect", he's a hoarder to the nth degree if you recall he even had a person in a glass cage he "collected", and at this point he has collected/been given an "infinity stone".

in MCU, the collector will also be in the next marvel movie "the guardians of the galaxy"

in 616 the infinity stones (of which there are six) are called the infinity gems (doesn't really matter what they're called in different worlds) soul, power, time, reality, space, mind (coincidentally they were obtained in this order). if someone collects all 6 they become god of the universe basically, and might as well put them all on one gauntlet, which leads to the infinity gauntlet saga, one of the biggest and most successful marvel crossover (this is where multiple heroes from different comics come together in one comic and across many different comic lines) events ever.

this is probably going to be in some form of some movie.

(i don't remember a red guy in the 1st thor movie, but i didn't really care for it so idk)

put simply: the collector guy is collecting powerful things, when he says 1 down 5 to go he is referring to infinity gems, which can actually take other forms besides just a little stone. the Aether is one such gem, as is the tesseract. Since the good guys didn't want to have two of them in the same place they gave one to the collector, thinking it would be safe in his vault.

The red guy (he's usually purple, the contrast was off in that scene) is Thanos, who is actively working to get in the pants of the embodiment of Death. He wants to collect the stones also in order to murder jillions of people to please her.

it hasn't been shown yet whether the collector is working with Thanos, or if Thanos just plans on ripping him off, but either way you can be sure Thanos will end up with all 6 stones sometime and then the real shit will go down. He's biding his time currently, that's why he wasn't in Thor 2.

Let's hope the latter happens before the end of the decade so don't have to reboot and recast the whole damn thing as well as Sony and Marvel can play ball together. It will deviate from the comic: the X-men should find the third gem. Spidey the fourth. The Guardians of the Galaxy the fifth, and the FF reboot the sixth. FF reboot introduces Silver Surfer properly. In between introduce Ant-Man, Wasp, Dr Strange, Daredevil, Iron fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Black Panther. Three movie trilogy of awesomeness. Then we go right into Secret Wars because RDJ will be 60 by then.

I would like to provide your idea with a +1 Internet, if only had the power.
