Proton is pretty highly recommended for torrenting, and it's what I use.

Is this stuff pretty safe these days to run on my main PC or do I want to setup a throw away vm?

Asked Claude Code how best to set this up and it walked me through setting up a vm running ubuntu server and qBittorrent running as a webservice. I am able to hit the vm through a web page on my main rig and sownloads go to the server thats isolated. Nice.

I've been torrenting for over 15yrs and I've never had a problem. I've never used a VPN either, but I only use private torrent sites.

as long as you don't click an exe for a movie, zero chance.
if you've forgotten torrents theres 2 ways to get the torrent, as a file or as a magnet
as a file you just download the file w/ the extension dot torrent and just drag it to qbittorrent
as a magnet it'll just be a string of letters starting like

I'd run it on a separate machine just so it's always up and not something you have to think about restarting, but yea as long you don't download .exe's like Lanx mentioned, you're going to be fine. And stay on private torrent sites.
