The movie is thematically about gender roles yes. But it shows what happens when the men lose their will to be men. The end of the movie he finds the will to become a man.

That's what I remember when I watched it years ago. On initial watch it's shitty. But after giving it some thought afterward, I'm pretty sure this is the theme.

Is that because the protagonist who is a man ends up fighting aliens in the Bermuda triangle and defeats them through sheer manliness?

What's the message of the movie all along with the aliens were keeping his just passed around down through alien implants or things like poising the water with alien hormones?

If it's not, I will probably never watch it.
