VR Headsets

It doesn't look like we have a thread for this.

Anyway I just picked up a Meta Quest 3S this boxing day, and have to say I am blown away by the experience. There seems to be a lot of criticism about this particular headset but have had no issue with it so far, and the experience has already got me thinking about upgrading to something maybe a bit lighter.

Anyone else into this stuff here, curious what you have and your experience is like? Aside from Games/porn/videos any other use cases (the AR feature is neat but not sure its all that practical)?

The first game I purchased was Alyx, if you are a fan of the half-life series this game does not disappoint. I am still searching for a game that can rival the immersion of this game.

I haven’t been into VR at all and I just bought a Quest 3 this week kinda on a whim. (Thank you Amazon same day delivery.)

I’m honestly blown away by the quality for something that’s self contained and portable. I hadn’t used any kind of VR in years and I’m like whoa this quality is actually superb.

I side loaded a bunch of games into it which is easy as fuck. Some of the games are fun and a legit workout too.

The graphics look GOOD. I don’t think I’d watch an entire movie with it but I watched a couple of YouTube videos and it’s kinda cool.

I'm not too impressed with Meta's apps and game offerings, so I have been largely buying steam games, but did end of purchasing virtual desktop from Meta. I have seen/heard where the steam version doesn't work as well.

Youtube from the Meta store is good, as it puts 360 videos into the feed, and some of those can really transport you. It kinda has me thinking of getting a 360 camera for my next holiday.

Yah some of the 3d videos on there are pretty cool.

I downloaded like 25 games for free yesterday, it’s the easiest pirating you can possibly do. They have a launcher that has the games and downloads them and directly installs them on your Quest.

Also this thing is a must have, makes a huge difference, cranks out all the juice the system has:

I recommend Google Earth VR, it's free on Steam. Lots of places are 3d scanned so you get a real feel for the geography, and using streetview to check out random cities is cool too. The photo quality on indoor places varies since a lot of it is uploaded by random people but some of it is really good.

I bought my son the Quest 3 for Christmas and it's cool. I haven't gotten to use it much but I do look forward to trying out some games with it when I have time. So far my wife and son have using it daily. I'm going to upgrade the head strap also.

Here is the VR thread.

I picked up a new strap/battery pack for mine, it does make it a bit more comfortable to use as I always found it a little droopy/front heavy.

Ah my searches were headsets and virtual reality, maybe mods can merge this thread with it. Last entry was back in September though.

Btw for my Canadian brethren, these headsets have no tax on them for the next month or two, or possibly until you know who is still around.

Any good headsets coming out this year? I know Valve/Steam is releasing one, but what's a good premium, super good resolution headset to recommend? Don't really care about cost, I just want to take advantage of the new PC. Hell I bought a PS5 Pro just for PSVR2 (worth it for GT7)

IMO just wait for the Valve one and see where its at then. I know like Pimax etc.. make some really high end ones if you looking to splurge that have great FoV. That's my biggest issue with VR right now is the whole "goggle" effect.

You might want to wait for

It'll have eyetracking built in, which is a huge feature because it should enable foveated rendering.

But who knows how many units will be available. If you want one soon getting the Quest 3 could make sense.

The main thread about VR is here: VR Gaming - Oculus Rift, Playstation VR, HTC Vive

The problem with the quest headsets is it's not a DP/HDMI port on the headset. It's usb-c or wireless and has to convert the video on the fly causing delays in the response time. This makes it difficult when doing things like Sim Racing. However, the Mixed Reality shit is top tier and it's the kind of QOL stuff that VR headsets desperately need and I hope that's what they are working on.

Here are some videos of the mixed reality stuff. I'd love to have this feature on my Pimax Crystal Light for my button box, shifter, keyboard, drink, etc. Second one is more impressive.
