I thought it might be an adaptation of The Tartar Steppe - Wikipedia , but it's based on a 1980 book of the same title by south african nobel prize winner J. M. Coetzee (who apparently was influenced by Buzzati's book).

Maybe this is good to the people that read the book. But the fact that you rarely ever see anything being done to anyone in the entire movie just isnt entertaining. I wasnt looking for Michael Bay, but at least show the Barbarians ambushing someone or... well.. something! The acting is great, but the movie is just.. well.. dry.

3/5 from someone who never read the book.
