I saw part of the trailer for this on YouTube and thought it was a TV show.

How the fuck is this over 2 hours long.

edit. Covid production that Universal had no faith in so they dumped the rights to Amazon for pennies on the dollar. Shit will be baaaaaaaaaad

Cube is basically the guy from South Park who watches people go to the bathroom on his bank of monitors.

Looks like he's alone in a room for most of the movie, my first thought was "covid production"

Save yourself 2 hours and watch the 1988-1990 War of the Worlds series instead. Or at least the first season of it (it got a complete reboot/overhaul after that and ceased to be worth watching).

Here's a really solid remastering of the 90 minute pilot episode, probably the best episode of the season.

The two main guys (Blackwood and Ironhorse) are a liberal and a conservative, and it makes for a wacky dynamic. That, and the insane gore level of this show, are things you probably aren't gonna see on modern TV.

This is still, to this day, the only TV show to freak me out as much as things like The Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers did, for similar reasons. The main characters are really goddamn likeable, and Ironhorse made me want to be a Marine as a kid. I always kinda felt like his character in this and his character in Predator were the same guy.

I used to watch that show when I was a kid. It was awesome. I remember they even had a spin-off where the martians had taken over the planet and it was a post-apocalyptic sort of show. I only remember seeing a handful of episodes of it and it was pretty dark if I remember.

I hate it when a trailer gives away the entire movie.

So this is a remake of the tom cruise one but with the shittiest actors imaginable?
I tried watching it this evening just out of curiosity. If you enjoy ice cube making faces like somebody either farted or shit but he can't locate it, or him just yelling what the hell or goddamn constantly, then this might be for you.

Also even with just a brief time I spent with it, and that's with just kind of fast-forwarding here and there, it seems like 75% of the film is the footage of right clicking for a drop-down menu for his super government surveillance program, and then him selecting an option to use a drone or whatever camera.

It's funny because this article from variety popped up and I know that's kind of trash rag, but even they're ripping on it.

‘War of the Worlds’ Review: Ice Cube Headlines a Disastrous Movie Retelling of H.G. Wells’ Alien Invasion Classic

I might fast forward through the rest of it just for the hilarity, but it's pretty bad. You can definitely tell it was a Kung-flu movie, I'm a CGI was probably done by budget ching chongs or poo people. Who knows, who cares....

The little bit I did watch I was rooting for the Martians the vaporize him and his kids, but without having seen the end I'm confident that probably doesn't happen, but I think his son is a super elite hacker, and knew the aliens were coming, and there's some sort of subplot with cube trying to track down the mysterious anonymous guy who's going to do a data dump on government secrets, and there's probably some stupid drama with him and his son over it, so maybe your son gets killed. That actually might make the movie better.

May try to finish it tomorrow and take one for the team.

My only memory of the show is a scene where a guy is in a barber chair and asks for the barber to take a little off the top, but the barber is actually a martian and pulls out a buzzsaw to decapitate the dude

That was Season 2, where they totally overhauled the show to make it post-apocalyptic. Most of the episodes were super-dark and not very good. This is why I generally recommend people only watch Season 1.

That said, S2 had a couple of really good episodes. The one where they go back in time to 1953 (I think it's called "A Time To Reap") might be a series-best episode outside of the pilot. Or maybe it just seemed amazing against the backdrop of most of S2 being so bad. The series finale was also pretty decent.

The one weakness S1 has is that it doesn't really have an ending, or anything to lead into why S2 is so different. It's just a regular season and ends with setup that never gets paid off.

Either way, S1 is a pretty damn good season of TV and way ahead of its time.

Bummer, 'cause there are two things that get remade every so often that I've been waiting for the next iteration of: WOTW and Body Snatchers.

Well, maybe the next Body Snatchers will be good. The last one was around 2007 ("The Invasion") and we generally get one every 20ish years.

My only memory of the show is a scene where a guy is in a barber chair and asks for the barber to take a little off the top, but the barber is actually a martian and pulls out a buzzsaw to decapitate the dude

WOTW is a really gruesome show. The aliens have three-fingered hands that burst out of their chests (while they're inhabiting human hosts) and maul people (or just grab them and change bodies to theirs). People lose limbs, eyes, etc on a regular basis and the aliens turn into piles of puke when they die (or leave a host body behind).

As a kid, the show had me looking under the bed and checking side-rooms late at night to make sure nothing was lurking. The idea that they'd spring out and take over your body, or that anyone you met might actually be an alien waiting to get you alone, was some freakish stuff.

It's a little like The Thing, but not as grotesque or apocalyptic since the aliens can only move from one body to another and are very killable.

War of the Worlds had it's hayday.

In 1938 CBS broadcasted a breaking news style adaptation of the story where 6 million people tuned in. 1.2 million people thought it was real and panicked. All because they tuned in late and missed the disclaimer. Chaos ensued in a number of cities, emergency phone lines blew up. People fled cities and sought underground shelters.

That kind of magic will never be captured again.

Didn’t they re-re-make this movie like a couple years ago with Tom Cruise? Do we already need to re-re-re-make it?
Earlyish to mid 00s. I remember seeing the theater and it wasn't bad. I think there was also mini series or something from the BBC in the 20 teens maybe. Never saw that one.

LOL couple years ago! You sound like a guy I work with. I ask him what was the last movie he saw out at the theater and not at home. He tells me he doesn't watch stuff at the theater too often and it has been "a few" years since he has gone. I say yeah me too, so what was the last movie he saw? "Memento" I'm like dude, pretty sure that came out in the late 90's.
