Shitboxes far beneath most of you. Not searching hardcore just casually. Aside as a computer would be kinda nice having a car in not worried about keeping clean. Still miss my VW a bit, nice that this allegedly had a lot of major service, not sure how lonely it is to fall apart though I didn't keep my VW to high miles.

Compared to this looks much cleaner but scant details and already double miles I wouldn't have a lot of faith the manual is good for much later and who knows power train.
if I could find my ‘98 Legacy Wagon, I would buy it immediately. By today’s standards it’s not special, but it was such a good car and it wouldn’t be a worry to bomb around in and leave outside. There’s a lot of freedom in having a stress free car.

I had a '94 Supra turbo 6-speed...before F&F... yes please just go ahead and kill me now. Wish I had that one back.

Anyone know how these hold up. Hate the dome dash but wife likes
Thought newer much improved but Google still makes it sound like a nightmare of 100k mile all the plastics failing and a pcv valve replacement that's a major job

Non gti golf would make 30s highest mpg. Ugly soccer but might be a good basic bitch

Wife still kinda wants this, we had one, love the paint. Little beat up but not bad, but don't like that it has a bank loan but somehow has the title allegedly.

Apparently they now consider everything broken down into key "modules" and they don't repair anything inside a module, it's swap and replace.
That's because almost everything is fed into your body control unit at some point. Have you ever actually looked at a wiring diagram on a modern car? Good fucking luck trying to diagnose issues with sensors, codes, etc. with all the various relays, switches, splices, capacitors, diodes, etc. present in modern cars. If you actually tried to go through and diagnose the specific module, sensor, load, or whatever giving you an issue, it could take fucking days, and you could have a technician possibly chasing their tail for weeks. Meanwhile, that same customer is bitching, "WHERE'S MY CAR!!?! I WANT IT NOW!!!!".

I’m sorry man I wanted one for ages, in Jade, but those days are long gone.
I still have a couple of supra friends from back in the day, both of them have GT3's now. One has a GT3 and a 997.1 turbo he does the runway race thing with. Good times.

The problem is fewer and fewer dealers are keeping a readily available supply of "parts".

The last time I went to my dealer it was for a worrisome sound coming from the transmission. They kept the car for a day and came back with "Looks to be an issue in the transmission, our only option from Cadillac is just to do a module replacement for the whole transmission, that will be $17k". Once I stopped laughing I told them to button the car up and I'd pick it up. Within an hour of getting home I had a recommendation to a good mechanic who specializes in CTS and CTS V series, called them, took it in the next morning. By lunch I had a text "looks like it really just needs a good servicing and a new fluid filter, should be doable for around $225 all included, should we do it?" I told them to, picked it up before dinner, and problem solved.

That was the last time I talked to Sewell. Apparently they now consider everything broken down into key "modules" and they don't repair anything inside a module, it's swap and replace.
Parts supply is a victim of cost cutting. They aren't going to carry a single bolt more than they have to.

In terms of "modules" a lot of car manufacturers no longer carry individual parts to fix things like in the olden days. $90 seal is out on your transmission? Gotta buy the whole new transmission. The list goes on and on. $1 seal is out on your AC? Buy the whole fucking thing.

Big 3 and others are really bad at this, and they blow though techs like nothing else, so no one has the knowledge or time to chase down little parts. Replacing the entire assembly is the only option.

Specialists are the top option, then a very good general shop next. Little shop I use has awesome mechanics. Their underwriter usually has a solution to a problem before I am done talking about it. These are also the guys who know to replace a $1 seal is the same as replacing a $600 pump. They get their shop time, so will do whatever to make it good for the customer.

This is where I'm at now. Specialist for the Caddy is a place called Eagle Transmissions, my generalist shop is Jacinto's which is a garage located in the back side of a Hispanic flea market in what can I best be called an "interesting" part of town not too far from me. The old man who runs Jacinto's will even usually tell you what's wrong, write down the parts you need, and you bring him the parts. Just pay for his shop time to fix it. Has been a very good mechanic for me on the cars I had pre-caddy as well. Pilipino guy by the name of Mihn, keeps the soda machine in his shop loaded with beer.

Like I said.... "not too far". I thought (without doxxing here) we'd kinda noted I live in NW Dallas. Not quite in whore central.... just somewhat whore adjacent. ;)
You are being very charitable to describe that area as a Hispanic flea market. Mexican Mos Eisley would be more accurate. :)

Very true sir. Only reason I know about Jacinto's is because back in the very early oughts, soon after I bought my house on this end of town. I was driving an old beat up Bronco and it died on the way to work. Called a tow truck, didn't have near enough in term of proper tools to try to dig into it at my house, so made the unforced error of having him take it to the one mechanic I had seen moderately near my place (a Pep Boys). They promptly (2 hours later) charged me for diagnostics and told me it would be close to $3k to fix. I called the tow truck and was going to have him take it back to my house and figure out a plan.
Guy says "Can we swing by a guy I know near here? Might be able to help you?" and I had nothing to lose. Get there Mihn jumped up onto the bed of the tow truck, pops the hood, take a couple looks and asks the tow guy to try turning it over, listens... Hops down and says "Go a couple blocks down to Napa, get a timing belt, your snapped, $350 and I can have it done by tomorrow morning".

Fate delivered onto me my new mechanic that day. Although I'll admit I haven't needed his services in quite a while, he might have retired by now. Nice guy.

I'm looking for vehicles for a couple of my kids and my wife. Just kinda shopping around right now. I pulled in to one place today, I'm looking for a manual transmission specifically, and he showed me the one car with manual transmission on the lot (that wasn't a Jeep, because fuck Jeep and it's shitty ride and bad mileage). It was a 1999 Saab 9-3 six speed turbo. He said it didn't look like much, but it goes like you wouldn't believe. So I tried it out. Holy shit, probably one of the fastest cars I've ever driven. It was wild. I was thinking of getting it, then I thought about what repairs would cost on a 1999 Saab. It would be ridiculous.

No. Brother….That company doesn’t exist anymore and you would be lucky to find any parts.

Best bet for a manual used car would be something between late 90s and maybe 2010. Japanese.

Nah. Those things were parts magnets when new. I doubt 30 years and many parts NLA has made it any better.
