I don't disagree, it's overcomplicating what should be a simple function and making it worse all for a gimmick. Don't get me wrong, these motorized recessed door handles are completely retarded, but this looks like improper operation. Nowhere in Mercedes' official documentation does it say to swipe. It says to tap the center if they don't retract automatically.
Of course you've got dickheads like this guy or a bazillion other assholes on tik tok telling you the wrong way who come up as the first result if you search.
This reminds me of those hands free tailgates on a lot of vehicles. People would constantly complain they'd never work. I'd have them demonstrate what they were doing and it was some of the most ridiculous shit. A lot of people would swipe their foot back and forth repeatedly side to side under the bumper almost falling over. The worst would do full speed soccer kicks into their bumper. None of that is in the manual or any official demonstration, so, I always wondered where they got the idea.
I think just about every OEM has put it on there at some point. The system is pretty basic. It consists of two capacitive electrodes mounted to the bumper, one to the face to detect the shin, and another near the bottom to detect the foot. It would detect a successful "kick" when the two electrodes were disturbed in a specific pattern.I had a car with that. You had to kick dead center and at a certain speed or else it would not work. Hard to use so I rarely ever used it.

Where companies failed, in my opinion, was ever using the word kick to describe the motion since people tended to point their toes and the shin wouldn't reliably get close enough to sufficiently register a disturbance. If they would have called it a shin sensor, I think it would have been more successful. It has other annoying problems, like getting accidentally set off when you're leaning into the luggage area and not working near a strong AM signal. The bump button Toyota put on their truck tail lights is probably a simpler and much more reliable solution for most people, I'm surprised it hasn't caught on more.
