I finished this game a couple times. What I would do is consolidate all the most powerful characters into the first, second, and third units. The most powerful would go in the first, then second, etc. I wasn't trying to balance them or anything.

Then I'd leave units 2 and 3 guarding the base (unit 2 slightly in front, and unit 3 just there as backup). If anything slipped by and went for the base capture, they'd deal with it.

Meanwhile, my OP first unit with all the strongest characters stacked in it would BEELINE for the enemy base, grabbing any towns along the way, and rip through everything due to their OP levels. When they hit the boss, I'd bomb tarot cards (which I hoarded the rest of the time) to make sure the boss went down.

Was able to beat the entire game pretty easily in about 10-12 hours doing this, IIRC. However my reptuation meter was perpetually tanked, and I never got any sort of good ending, due to my lack of liberating many towns / keeping them secure once liberated, and having one unit do almost everything.

I did a max reputation and alignment play through and had 20 units that were all pretty strong that I'd just rotate every level up. Also got all the secret characters etc. Was a lot of work

That was more or less my playthrough also. It was funny to liberate towns and have heroes that otherwise would join your army tell you to fuck off. And the ending was basically "a tyrant falls, another tyrant takes his place". Sorry game! It was too tedious to play a different way for my teenage self.

For those mentioning Bloodborne, emulation is making some pretty big strides. I only messed around with it for an hour or so and it was still kind of buggy for me, but there are some nice high res packs and pretty much whatever resolution and framerate your PC can handle.
