I enjoy lots of things, Koushirou is right the battle scene was nuts from an animation perspective, and easily the most enjoyable part of the film - and like I said visually it was top notch. Even without the random woke shit I would not have liked the story in this. It felt rushed and disjointed, while also feeling like it was 4 hours long. It was a super simple story that seemed to take forever to tell, and just wasn't that interesting. The only character I liked and wanted to see more of was a big bird who was in the movie a total of about 5 minutes.

I did a movie night at my house about a month ago and we all watched Kubo and the Two Strings. I've seen that movie like 5 times and I still fucking tear up multiple times in that. I'm running a Halloween for kids thing at a nearby native reservation, and the movie I'm showing is Coraline. The studio has put out some of the best stop motion ever made, and hell, what they do with stop motion in this one tops them all. I was REALLY excited for this.

Movie was still Meh.

Its funny, because after typing all that I was like "even the woke shit was just kind of in the background mostly", but now I'm sitting here thinking about it and fuck - Main character never changes or grows, has no weaknesses, is just the hero girl from the start. Villain lady is the only other competent character, and she is only evil because of grief. Every single man in this is an absolute fuckwit. Main characters dad - absolute cuck and weak hippie dude. Girls male friend, absolute dork and whiney loser. Town Mayor is a braindead idiot who fell into power while being wyrmtongued by a sketchy creepy dude. Even the main forest good guy was just a violent idiot that everyone assumed couldn't be reasoned with. Communities of people magically segregated for hundreds of years in the woods, yet every single person is a different race and ethnicity. It's all shit that we're tired of seeing.

I didn't really think about any of this during the movie, I just went "Well this character sucks" for every fucking character. Then I went "Not a fan of the story either". Then I walked out going "Well... it wasn't the worst, and looked incredible, so I guess it was ok" but yeah, maybe it was just kind of bad.

I will now go back to looking forward to seeing "You Can See Everything" and "Godzilla Minus Zero" :p

Just saw it, first Laika movie I've ever been disappointed with. It was fine, visually stunning, but at no point did I care about anything happening. The story and characters just didn't click with me at all.

Not to be an old man yelling at clouds too much, but it did also jam a few liberal messaging points in there. First 5 minutes had a characters talking about how when their kid grows up they can love a he/she/they thing, then a big "Drag queen story hour" sign in the background moments later. I was like "Well, maybe they are just showing Portland being Portland", but later they have a girl coming home to her wife/girlfriend, and 2 men embracing and kissing in another scene. References to not trusting western medicine as well, and yeah, just enough stuff that it had me going "Why does a kids movie need any of this?" kind of thing.
They went downhill with Missing Link. I turned it off about 15 minutes in. Kubo wasn't very good, either.
