Is there any way to turn off Windows detecting the powered on / off status of a monitor? I want to be able to stream Steam games or remote into my desktop from work while my home monitor is powered off, but if it's powered off Windows basically gives me a black screen on the remote clients.

I remote daily with the screen off (power button) and never had this problem. Radeon video card, 8.1 enterprise, qnix monitor on dual-link dvi.

I have a Radeon as well. 8.1. Acer monitor and dual link DVI.

If I'm Steam streaming to my living room and manually press the power button 'off' on my host monitor, the screens goes black on the Steam client. My monitor is powered off at home right now and if I remote in with VNC from work, it's a black screen and I can't access my desktop. When I shut my secondary monitor off, it automatically adjusts my desktop to fit one monitor, so it's clearly recognizing when these are powered off. I just wish I could find a way to manually start or stop that feature.

My secondary monitor is plugged in through HDMI and I'm reading it may have something to do with that, as it seems to be only happening on multi-display setups using HDMI or Display Port.

As far as I know, HDMI and DP monitors act as PnP devices. If you want to do that, you probably have to use only VGA or DVI.

Before I drop $120-$140 for Win 8.1 Pro 64 OEM, anyone have ideas to get it on the cheap? The r/softwareswap has banned MS software. Need Pro for the $10 Media Center upgrade.

No one needs the media center upgrade.

I fucking wiped my windows install specifically to revert that 'upgrade.'

I do with my m-card tuner. It's probably the only thing that keeps me on Windows (being the only OS that can access m-card content).

Isn't it only pirated ms software, that's banned from r/softwareswap? What about simple MSDN keys?

Having a derp moment and can't figure out a setting. Sister in laws computer running 8.1, when you hit the windows keyboard key the apps page comes up on her monitor. However if you want to click the windows button, to get that same apps page up, you can only do it from her second monitor. She says it changed and she doesn't know how.

Went into monitor settings, and the main monitor is set correctly. My google searches are turning up nothing. Just trying to switch the active windows button from secondary to primary monitor.

Right click the task bar, properties, navigation tab. You may or may not have "Show Start on the display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key" checked.

It's not checked. When I hit the windows key, it displays on the correct primary monitor that I want it too. But I can't mouse click the same way as it's only active on the secondary monitor and displays on the secondary monitor as well.

If the taskbar is only visible on the second monitor then you're only going to be able to bring up start on that monitor via clicking.

Task bar is visible on both screens. Same exact thing. But can only click the windows button on second monitor.

LMAO, MS still want to slap a subscription on their ShitOS:

Big changes ahead for Windows: says Microsoft exec - GeekWire

"And finding new ways to monetize the lifetime of that customer on those devices, again, I would tell you we're learning, we're growing, and we're smarter and wiser every day. And we still have some more learning and growing to do in that space. But, stay tuned. The business model stuff will be out in the early - probably the early part of 2015."

So, they say they are learning, and growing and getting smarter every day, yet they want to slap a sub on their os? What planet are these people from? I guess their assholes are still sandy from completely missing the mobile movement. Apple could make a division that sells cheaper PC's than their Apple fare - call it Newton, slap OSX on it, and offer a range of good boxes from $500-$1000...sit back and watch the people go batshit over it.

Says the basic OS would be free, subscriptions would be for 'advanced features.' That sounds awesome, since I disable/completely gut practically all of the 'advanced features' of Windows as it is.
