Caught up on a few recent-ish movies that I missed: This, Substance, Revenge. Every single one of them basically shat on men for the entire runtime, as in every male in all three movies was either a coward, a horny idiot, an asshole, or a killer/rapist. Like zero redeeming male qualities to be found anywhere on any dude in sight.

This one has a long-running subplot where a kindly black woman is trying to expose the killer. However, nobody listens to her and a bunch of misogynist white men get in her way, so it goes nowhere in scene after scene. Not sure why that entire subplot was in the movie (since it goes nowhere). I expected her to unmask the guy and save the day, but nope, just stymied by incompetent white men and then disappears. Also the kindly black woman is an implied lesbian so there's that too.

I would bet actual money that that part of the story didn't happen in real life and was completely made-up for the movie, in which case I wonder why even include it at all. Just to let everyone know that we'd be better off if white dudes would get out of the way? Thanks for sharing your political insights, Anna Kendrick.

All of that said, it's actually a pretty solid movie. B+. Liked the twist at the end (which did happen in real life). Anna Kendrick's character is pretty cool with the way she runs mental circles around the dudes on the show (assuming that happened in real life...)

Most awkward date scene I've ever seen put to film, as well.
