Nerds to drop a little variety into their souls like naming conventions. Wo Long. Wukong. Wuchang.

Looks cool though. Hope it's more like Wukong than DS.

Not a huge fan of the Chinese aesthetic, tbh. Hopefully they have a demo at some point.

is it going to be a soulslike or a leniar set of stages possibly including mechanics where you knock a foe into the air?

I immediately assumed this is going to be a sequel to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, since it takes place in China. But...I don't think that's the case? Yeah it's pretty confusing. Especially with fucking Fallen in the name.

Wo Long desperately needs a sequel. It covers about half of the Three Kingdoms Era (with a Souls spin on it) and ends just as things are getting good (i.e. the actual breaking of the alliance / conflict of the Three Kingdoms). The ending certainly looked like they intended to do a sequel.

This game's rating is getting absolutely butchered on Steam for bad performance.

I tried it on Game Pass for PC and it definitely played like ass, but I put it on my Xbox Series X instead, and it seems to play just fine.

I've barely gotten anywhere in this game, but from initial experience I have to complain about the bonfire/reset mechanic being a "manual" thing instead of a refresh just from accessing the shrine.

They did give me a halberd that acts a little like the 2handed version of the axe in Bloodborne, so I'm willing to negotiate.

My PC Game Pass download is almost finished so going to fire it up in a few minutes and will see how the performance is. I'm sure just like Clair Obscur and everything else recently I'll get 20 minutes in and then distracted by work / kids and never return.

I never played Wukong so can't compare. It has some definite Chinese jank to it from a production standpoint. Things that you would expect to be interactable in the environment just aren't and it stands out in places. Things like that overall. I'm running perfect on a 9070XT with no performance issues at all, max settings.

Only got to the first boss guy with the flaming spear. Nothing too difficult. It isn't the worst, but it isn't inspiring so far. Will continue playing unless it just completely falls apart.

Pretty quickly get access to two-handed sword, one handed sword, spear, axe, and something else I think. Not far enough in to really compare weapons or weapon trees. It feels Sekiro'ish with the trick arm which is now the feather arm, but also Nioh in some aspects. Combat isn't as slow and purposeful as a From game, but not as twitchy and fast as Nioh so far. Mostly relied on dodge but you can block with axe.

Skill tree has stat nodes so you don't (so far) directly put points into stats. You unlock str, agi nodes as you travel down a weapon path. The weapon paths grant other abilities and modifications to current abilities. Respec appears to be free or maybe I missed a cost / downside. So that is nice. You convert your "souls" into node points and spend the points on the skill tree. There are other resource requirements for certain

Weapon Mastery nodes, guessing that will be the limiting factor on some of them. Maybe it replaces the Blacksmith now that I think about it. Spend your node point + red feather thing for +1 Mastery to Spears. There's still stuff to unlock back at home base so I'm sure there's some systems missing now.

Really want to like this game, but it's got a couple serious issues.

1. Performance. It actually runs fine on my PC (3440x1440 @ high settings... but this is offset by a poor FSR implementation and completely non-functional framegen). There's no stuttering at all though. Series X is a different story. Balanced (40fps-120Hz container) mode has poor frame pacing. Performance seems to as well; I can't tell if it fails to hit 60 fps all the time or not because it too uses the 120Hz container. Didn't try quality at all since there's no way I'm playing a game like this at 30 fps. All modes require running uncapped fps mode on my LG OLED. If I run it capped it causes the worst VRR flicker I've ever seen and also it screws up the 120Hz container causing the TV to dip to 80 fps at times. Unfortunately uncapped modes have some occasional tearing, suggesting that VRR isn't actually working with that setting.

2. Pay 2 win. The Game Pass version is completely barebones and doesn't even come with the extras included with the $50 edition, and also none of the pre-order bonus stuff. Deluxe version includes a bunch more weapons and armor sets. None of this stuff is accessible through normal gameplay, and from what people who've completed the game have said there really isn't much gear to be found in the game so the stuff in the DLCs is actually significant percentage of the total gear available in the game. It also isn't junk you use for an hour and then throw away; it's some of the strongest gear available at least up through mid-game, especially the preorder "axe" and the deluxe ed. caster sword. I should mention that you can upgrade the Game Pass version to deluxe, but at least according to the store page that will not get you the preorder stuff or the missing items from the $50 edition. It's strictly the stuff that comes with deluxe, nothing more.

I'd just stick to playing it on PC, but an even worse problem than the performance/image quality is that it completely shut off my PC after playing for about 60-90 minutes. I don't know what exactly happened since it left nothing in event viewer, but it's bullshit when I can play Cyberpunk on mostly ultra settings with RT on for several hours at a time without any issues.

That’s really odd on the performance but there’s limitless combinations of hardware. I’ve seen no issues with framegen or shutting the machine down, anything. Maybe I am fundamentally misunderstanding the issue but during my play through the FPS graph, frame time, and other stats all read fine and I have no stuttering or artifacting. Just a pretty solid 180 fps. For some reason HDR wasn’t accessible even though my monitor supports it, but I probably have a windows setting wrong. Haven’t looked into it. I could also just be an aberration.

Doesn’t change much about the actual game though. Even after 4 hours I’m just sort of playing it hitting buttons. Don’t feel invested or ingrained in anything special. Just chop chop stuff, repeat.

There's a patch now that seems to fix most of the performance issues. Haven't gotten to a boss room to see if it completely shuts my PC off still though (that's when it happens--the first time I get to a new boss room).

Edit: GPU Hotspot is running about 15 deg cooler than yesterday so it seems fixing the performance also fixed the overheating that was causing my thermal shutdowns. And FSR 3.1 framegen is working fine now too. Kind of a shame they couldn't have had this patch ready to go before release, would have saved them the ~30k negative review hole they have to dig themselves out of now.

Also, WTF is this thing?
