Boy, if they thought sales figures were bad now... You just wait. Yikes. $80 for video games isn't going to age well outside the mega titles.
I honestly have to wonder, who the hell are all these people still rushing out in the masses to drop $70+ on new AAA games? I think of myself as being one of the bigger spenders/enthusiasts when it comes to gaming and I can rarely justify doing that. I usually just put everything new that I find interesting in my watchlist and wait for sales to come along and maybe pick some up when they've been well discounted.

AAA gaming is in a real bad spot right now because of massive bloat and insane budgets to pay incompetent devs hired for diversity instead of talent so they can crank out shit worse than what we got 15-20 years ago

So obviously raising prices is the answer

Yeah with my new gaming PC I’m done getting fucked over for shit hardware and even shittier subscriptions.

And tariffs my ass. They are jacking their games to 80 and their hardware is old as fucking dirt. They aren’t hurting by now in the profits department.

going to be a whole lot of people raising prices and blaming tariffs.
Microsoft's excuse is a real laugh:
We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions
and the rising cost of development.

Huh, I wonder why development costs have skyrocketed at all of these brain-drained companies. Perhaps Microsoft should tell their studios to include even more forced woke garbage, propaganda, body types, soy, microtransactions, macrotransactions, and hire all the DEI failures to head their handful of "Xbox First Party Games" left remaining to keep "Xbox" from just being "Bethesda and Activison-Blizzard."

To add more insult to injury, Microsoft couldn't even retain the masculinity in the two highest test franchises they had with Halo and Gears, but they now own King games after the Acti-Blizzard acquisition, so they really have no excuse to continue the farce of catering to the "50% of female gamers" who just play mobile game bullshit. However, modern game companies are so out of touch from the woke kool-aid that they risk losing the women, too, because just like every functioning human, women don't want to play as uglified, androgynous freaks (see: Pokemon Go's character changes).

Unlike Sony who raised hardware prices everywhere except the US, other countries/regions stopped bothering to stock Xbox anything, which makes that "development costs" excuse all the more sad when they know full well that not nearly enough people are buying their games alongside the hardware. They piss money away making games for nobody in multiple facets because they've been whittling down the entire Xbox brand to the US alone, while shutting their eyes and ears to the overwhelming market demands.

Bonus line for even more of a laugh:
Looking ahead, we continue to focus on
>offering more ways to play more games across any screen and
>ensuring value for Xbox players.
The former not only leaves no value for the latter, but calls into question the entire point of being an Xbox player when Microsoft is seemingly intent on spitting in the face of everyone who bought anything Xbox (or Microsoft because the same applies to basically everything that Microsoft makes, especially Windows). I almost feel bad for the people still being gaslit into thinking that Xbox is anything beyond a publisher and service provider

Sony's own drought of games and ideological capture producing their own brand of trash might be the best thing that could have happened to Microsoft at the moment, but now Playstation players are just as likely to start passing on Microsoft published games if they have an $80 price tag.

It's crazy, right? Just goes to show that the average consumer can screw everything up for everyone else, and it's only gotten exponentially worse as video games have been forcibly thrust into the mainstream. Look at how long it has taken for even the "normies" to grow at least noticeably tired of the video games industry's antics producing dreck.

To that end, not exactly the best timing on Microsoft's part because there is going to a smaller segment of an already shrunken audience willing to pay their premium, especially since Microsoft does no appear willing to crack down on their rampant quality control issues and out of touch bubble.

100% on point, entirely accurate take when it comes to their problem right now.

Feels like just a year ago I was a fan of Xbox because I truly liked what they have been doing. I always loved the Xbox One for it's HDMI pass-through feature, something I wish other consoles could have. I loved their UI, controller, and the way they smoothly integrated One - Series games with enhancements going from X enhanced resolution boost to FPS boost and all the back catalogue they offered from the 360 gen often with those enhancements. Problem is not enough people seemed to give a shit about that and everyone just started flocking to Gamepass especially given it's initial low price and ease to stacking up months for an upgrade.

Thing is the market and overall economy is going through a big shift right now and prices have steadily increased beyond where they were not that long ago while most people seem to be only struggling more financially overall. Microsoft is definitely trying to turn Xbox into some expensive premium online gaming service it seems, but who knows if that's what the public really wants. At their current rate seems like it won't be long until the whole brand is valued as little more than Bethesda/Actibliz.

kinda weird, not sure if Microsoft Store means just Windows 11 PC store or also the actual xbox itself

interesting times anyways, Gabe is 62 years old and has to be thinking about who is going to run Valve next. hopefully he doesn't sell to Microsoft because they would run it immediately into the ground.

It's for the MS handheld and next gen Xbox console, which sound like they are going to be very similar in design. Sadly, there's probably no hope of the integration extending to PlayAnywhere, since both companies want their 30% cut. Being able to play Steam games on the next Xbox because it's basically just a PC is still pretty cool though. Course that also means that MS will finally have to make Windows -> TV connectivity not be a massive heap of shit.

Also, they aren't kidding about the Xbox app on Insider being much better performance than the regular version. Everything loads a lot faster.

I highly doubt the FTC would allow Microsoft to acquire Steam anyways after they made such a big deal about them acquiring just a publisher. I feel like Gabe would probably just setup Steam to remain independent and have one of his top and most trusted people right under him takeover whenever he retires.

xbox seems so lost. meh showcase, quietly cancels xbox handheld (to focus on "pc handhelds" made by third parties), gamepass isn't getting as many good games anymore, its really not a question in my mind of when everything xbox comes crashing down but when

Doesn't that sound like...everyone? Sony released a Playstation handheld streaming device and their games are weak AFTER they upped the price. Nintendo released the Switch2 which only had a lackluster Mario Kart game at launch.

I mean, people were hoping FromSoft would dump a big game on us, but we got Nightreign and a half-assed Duskbloods trailer.

A lot of studios have been canned lately, too.

I think everything is just settling for a little while before the next big generation.

It seems like they are going all-in on the services agenda, and I really don't think turning Xbox into little more than some publisher and subscription is a good idea. The reason I got an Xbox wasn't for gamepass but all the games they had that I couldn't play elsewhere, for a long time all I really needed was Forza games for that to work for me. Then it's like this gen they didn't product jack shit in the way of exclusives besides maybe Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Forza Horizon 5 hardly counts anymore as that went over to Playstation and it was basically a late last-gen title anyways. Now it's like I can't think of anything I would want an Xbox for outside of old exclusive backlog.

Now this brings me back to Gamepass because it was always just something to go along with a console I already owned. It was easy for me to justify having Gamepass Ultimate because it wasn't that expensive and I was still interested in trying out new games that came along. Now though it's like the price steadily crept up to where I eventually said fuck it, went down to Gamepass Core, and now I just no longer care about any of their services. For me the biggest problem with these services is how they either have too many old games I already own or I realize how I might as well just buy the stuff I actually like on sale as opposed to continuing to pay some subscription fee to access it because the vast majority of what the subscription has just doesn't appeal to me.

So now I'm like, how many people will still continue to subscribe to Gamepass when they no longer have a console that goes along with it? If they're going to make it more like a PC, why even bother with what Xbox is doing when you could just buy a proper gaming PC and not have to pay for their services? I just think they are being really stupid right now and I also think them trying to jump on promoting their next gen right now is just some last desperation move because they know they have basically ruined themselves for the remainder of this gen.

So on the topic of these new "Not-xbox but kinda really xbox handhelds"....

Mrs. Haus Mrs. Haus is leaning towards wanting one of the better ones since it would let her apparently play the whole of gamepass, plus the whole of her steam library on a device she could carry around. Is that a legit use case and viable for these things yet? Reading on them it looks a lot like it's still in the MS walled garden of ecosystem and not open to Steam. I saw one in the wild for $479 (Asus ROG Ally Z1, @ Sam's Club), but apparently if you want the real full deal you need to buy a model that's something like $599? And not out yet? (https://www.xbox.com/en-US/handhelds/rog-xbox-ally)?

It seems like they're finally dropping the pretense that a "gaming platform/console" is really anything more than a gaming PC in appliance form factor. I also wonder what the potential of these devices for running more than games would be. On the XBOX release day stream thing they had I saw the clip on this and it seemed to imply that the things is just running windows 11.

Yes and no. The announced handheld platform / devices won't play console-only games unless you stream them, and will only play games normally available via the PC store, as I understand it. So for example EA's NHL games and College Football won't be playable, because they're only on consoles and aren't available on streaming. Your only option for titles like that is to play them via remote play on an Xbox console. Just a couple top of mind examples because they're titles I'm interested in.

They are certainly moving towards what you describe as they put more emphasis on the Play Anywhere program, they just aren't there yet. We'll see if subsequent licensing agreements change any of this.
