If they shut down xbox hardware then they would also shut down gamepass since the vast majority of xbox game pass subscribers own xbox consoles. Don't see that happening. At least not in the next few years. Game pass is very profitable (according to MS), and central to their current strategy of ubiquity of access.

So there will be at least one more console generation from xbox.

They don’t care about hardware. They own the PC market and can OEM everything else. They literally think they will gamepass / Xcloud app their way to every living room as pure software via subscriptions through smart TV apps with no need for a console. And they are stupid enough to think that will work.

As mentioned my belief is that they're going to partner with hardware manufacturers (like with the Asus ROG Ally) and eventually that means one will essentially design a PC that just has an XBOX official "shell" on it and skin for Windows 11 that makes it feel like a dedicated gaming platform. Essentially this is the endgame and the PCMR has won. ;)

Don't know how incriminating this will be, but the guy modding my old XBOX, the mod will include swapping out the internal HD for a 1TB SSD. That SSD will have a lot of stuff on it. Emulator for all N64 and prior roms, PS1 Emulator, MAME emulator, and as for XBOX games? From XBOX 360 and OG XBOX he just asked "What genres do you and your wife like?" and will be packing a LOT of games on there from sources on the high seas I think....

I'm going to see if that can keep me happy with more games than I will ever really have time to finish. Oh, and you can put in disks with rip collections of other games and roms to play those.... And no subscriptions at all.

They just made an update to the Xbox app on pc where they’re pushing everything via a cloud subscription. Play all your Xbox console games that you own on Xbox on your pc VIA CLOUD SUBSCRIPTION!
There's nothing new about that at all. Cloud Gaming has been around for years and has always streamed the Xbox version of the games.
Xbox updated the XB PC app and it’s fucking unusable right now. My library is almost all games that I own on Xbox but are not playable on pc unless you buy them again but there’s not an option to filter by games that are only playable on pc so you have to click on each one to see what you own on Xbox and what is also playable on oc.
You don't have this?

I run the Xbox Insider version, but the app has looked like this since the last major UI redesign.

I understand that cloud gaming has always been a thing, but the interface changed.

I guess now there’s a sub filter under the main filters that sorts by installable that I hadn’t previously seen.

Is there a way to turn off my steam play history from showing under “most recent” on the Xbox app? (Nvm I found it under settings)

Walmart and target are pulling Xbox consoles
Edit: and games. Removing the entire Xbox sections

Been tellin ya'll, Xbox is now where Dreamcast was at during it's final days. ☠️

It's just not official yet, but Xbox consoles as we know them are basically done, gone, soon to be a thing of the past. They're probably going to be clearing out the rest of their stock supply and I doubt anyone will be finding new Xboxes on sale with much ease anymore.

I think the next gen Xbox is for sure going to be some PC hybrid deal if they even release it.

This looks like PR talk though, the thread is also full of people saying their local target/walmart have been removing stuff or dumping them on discount/clearance. They can still be in partnership with the company but have scaled down heavily so only a few locations will have stuff and what not. Costco already did that a few weeks back.

Yeah I trust the workers over PR speak. I know it's only anecdotal but I don't even know anyone in RL with an Xbox...

basically target, walmart, gamestop etc all get paid by Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft to stock products on their shelves. Its not much but its marketing co-spend money.

Microsoft pulled that money a while back for xbox physical. Target (etc) can still stock anything, but they won't get any money from Microsoft for doing so. Most are electing to slowly replace those shelves with shit that sells better, like Roblox gift cards and toys that tell you that white men are evil

I have seen enough big stores and brands fall to be able to recognize the patterns by now. First the stock supply stops being replenished, then people start to take notice, then corporate tries to run a bunch of ass covering statements like "we're changing distributors" or talking about how they still have partnerships or something, then the shelves go empty as they keep doubling down on the statements pretending like they're going to restock everything one day. They keep refusing to allow anybody know what is really happening, only for the inevitable bankruptcy or shutting down headlines to release one day eventually.

I am pretty sure it always goes down like this so corporate can have time to liquidate all the assets they can while doing everything in their power to give their executives a golden parachute as the brand goes bust.

In Microsoft's case, I simply see them eventually eliminating most Xbox operations, reducing the once iconic brand to little more than PC controllers and basic legacy services. Just about everyone will get laid off one day, but the top executives will receive a cushy departure deal.

My only concern with this is that I have a large amount of Xb360 and Xb One digital games I want to be able to download and play down the road. Do you think theyd discontinue the ability to download and play your digital copy of Black Ops 1 on my XSX, for example?

Yeah that's probably only my real concern as well. I did the best I could to future proof, keeping my old Xbox One consoles and loading them up with all the best digital games I could from my library and taking them offline, but who knows how long they will hold up. I think getting a big external SSD and filling it with OG, 360, and One games to be played on my Series X might be the best I could do to extend that, but there is definitely some eventual uncertainty on how well Microsoft will keep services going. Even Sony and Nintendo are pretty bad about that, like try downloading old games you bought on a PS3, 3DS, Wii, or Vita for example. It's definitely the downside to digital gaming for the long run, and sadly my library has been almost entirely digital since the beginning of the PS4/One gen with the exception of the Switch 1 because game discs became little more than a physical alternative to DRM.

There's no way get out of the games business entirely in the near future. $15B+ revenue a year in games and game pass, high margin businesses. Hardware is debatable, but they will keep selling games, and the old games you bought will continue to be available on their digital stores long into the future.
