Is this a documentary or a movie ? A lot of the reviews make it sound like it's not a documentary in a way and more like a skit or whatever

It's both, it's a movie where the first half is a documentary.

Maybe a better way of putting it would be first half documentary and second half documentary about making a documentary.

I guess that doesn't help, thank you

got a tl:dr for those of us that don't want to fuck with a paywall?

According to author, investigator and advocate Katie Carter, Oppenheim attended a training session for mitigation filmmakers who make short documentaries aiming to humanize criminal defendants in an effort to win them a lighter sentence in the eyes of judges and prosecutors.

In an Instagram post which went up on Sunday, Carter accused Oppenheim of misrepresenting his intentions when he attended the training session and of stealing proprietary footage which he then used for a New York Times 2017 Opinion documentary called “No Jail Time: The Movie,” which he sold to the publication.

“None of us knew any of this,” says Carter. “He lied entirely about his project and what he was up to and he made money by stealing stories from poor people facing crimes and surviving poverty.” Carter goes on to say that her efforts to have Oppenheim take down his short film and return the footage were ignored.

When reached by phone Carter declined to comment.

A spokesperson for The New York Times commented: “The third party footage in ‘No Jail Time’ was not private; Mr. Oppenheim was reporting on and analyzing videos that were submitted to judges by criminal defendants as part of sentencing proceedings. His use of clips of those videos to discuss this phenomenon is fair use.”

A spokesperson for Oppenheim has not commented.

So he made a documentary about people who make films to get people lighter criminal sentences as thats something I had no idea was a thing lol. Then he sold it to the NYT. Sounds like people whining they got exposure to something that sounds retarded.

The only people who think its pro pedo havent seen it. Its clearly a dramatization about a person who decided to expose pedos and got obsessed making the show as big as possible which warped the reason for the show to be and became more concerned about ratings then protecting kids. Pattinson acting over the top worked because while Hanson isnt as deranged as that IRL, the motivation to compete with Lost as a show about "protecting" kids sounds insane.

saw this today based on the hype. I've loved most of the things nathan has done although for me Nathan For You is still peak comedy.

I thought this was ok. I don't honestly get the hype. I didn't know much about the chick before the movie and I know even less after. The whole thing felt like a big nothing burger. Sure, the second half where Amanda Siefried is in the movie is super clever and very meta, but it feels like it appeals to Hollywood insiders who are gonna be like "WHOAH THIS IS FUCKING GENIUS" but as a normie... I don't really care at all? Like who gives a fuck?

its a great watch at home. I don't think there is any reason at all to see it in theaters, its fucking 2h45m and the movie drags a lot. Nathan felt like a fake person most of the time, only upstaged by how fake everyone else was. Maybe thats the point, but again... who cares?
