I can really appreciate all your photos...I'm not really into photography, only because I can't dedicate the time and money for the proper equipment (all the pictures I post are from a simple pocket-fitting Lumix, Panasonic DMC-FH25), you can probably tell due to my relative crappy quality pics. I'll keep posting though as long as you guys aren't bothered by that...Looking forward to more of your pics.
Don't think that because you don't have a high end camera that you can't take high quality photos. ADSLRwill be able to take pictures better in difficult conditions and gives you more control, but even low end P&S cameras can take great pictures if the light/conditions are favorable.

well i'm not sure if i said it earlier, but i think that's my issue; i realize that my cameracantake great pictures, but a lot of the ones that i really want to take don't have those favorable conditions...that and i don't feel like waiting for those good conditions...but i'm sure there will be a day when i can afford the pricier toys.

The main places where the P&S's fail is in low light or when taking pictures of things that are moving quickly. Also, for a lot of pictures you have to wait for good light no matter how fancy your camera is. One of the main skills in photography is learning to "see" light and then being willing to to be at the right place at the right time to get the picture you want.

^This.

I returned home soaking wet but I love the shots I got today.

We got a TON of snow today, went out took some shots. Thoughts?

What camera did you use for these? I don't see any info on flicker or fb about camera/exp, etc. Curious

For most of the shots f10, this is a little bit too high but for the lens I was using its where it is most crisp.

1/100 to 1/200
ISO 500

^these stats are due to f10, in hindsight i would probably shoot at 1 or 2 stops lower.

There are a lot of inexpensive alternatives, having a high end camera does not mean you will be taking amazing shots. I should show you some of the shots from when I first started, I welcome CC and adjust for it.

For example:

The shot is good. It fails because I have a lot of great converging lines but the photo is not centered. Someone else pointed this out and since this is something new I am trying to tackle, these are little things I need to pay attention to when shooting. I would not have known about this unless I had spent time reading about the types of shots or gone out and taken a few myself and asked for some CC. The best way, imo, to learn and get better is by going out and shooting.

So what am I going to do about it? I'm going back as soon as the snow melts and going to retake the shot. Check out some of Feien's work earlier on in this thread. He has done some awesome things with converging lines.

^Definitely dig this shot.

Here's one that I took a long time ago when I knew nothing about photography and had a super shitty camera. It's not the greatest exposure but I still kind of like it.

You can fix up that exposure, its not that bad. I love the shot and the fact he matches the glasses. That and the fact that I can see whats going on behind you in the lens is pretty awesome.

I realy liked most of the pictures you posted on the previous pages, but for the last few ones (black and white), the first thing that struck me was that they feel "grey". The whites are grey, the blacks are grey, there is no black and no white. I am by no mean a specialist of b&w photography, I might be completely wrong

Are you using tools like lightroom ? Maybe try to add more contrast or something ?

No, you're right. Black and White is something new I am playing with and I have noticed that my shots tend to be more gray than white. I think its because I have the highlights too low and I should bring my blacks and shadows up a bit as well as reduce my Recovery and bring my Fill Light up.

I'm not really a photographer, but I DID take this pic. These are my buddies from Radio Cult doing a Convention in Chattanooga, TN this weekend. The man in the foreground looking at the camera is the actor who played Jango Fett. I thought it was pretty awesome.

One I took a couple of years ago. This won't upload for some reason in its full resolution (2MB - actually think I have a 4 meg version). Any settings I should change to get this to post in higher resolution?

Any recommendations for a good portable stand/tripod? for a t4i?
For something portable, I usually use a monopod. Much easier to carry around on a hike or what not and can usually still get me steady enough to use slow shutter speeds for things such as waterfalls.

Honestly, for things like posting on forums and Facebook and what not, I don't get to bothered about getting hi-res versions out there. If you are posting to a serious hobbyist website or something just link to a full-res version. When posting online, how the picture looks depends so much on how a person has their computer/monitor set up (which you have no control over) it isn't worth spending a ton of time worrying about it.

I do make sure to do my re-sizing in Lightroom/Photoshop as generally when online services such as Facebook re-size for you it turns out terrible.

I'll take a monopod while hiking for two reasons:
1 - In case I need to use a slower shutter speed for a shot.
2 - In case I need to move a rattlesnake out of my path. This monopod extends to almost 6 feet...so more than enough to coax em off the trail.
Gotta love hiking in the desert near sunset...

What are you looking to do? Do you want to be able to play with color saturation, exposure, contrast, etc. or are you trying to put your best friends face on a guy humping a whale?
