Their TLE server is live as of today.

Hopefully the 12 or so people that are interested world wide don't try to hammer the login servers at the same time :p

I think we're in the running for shortest lasting TLE server ever! Which is pretty impressive considering there's EQ2 PvP servers to compete with.

Not my post but accurate:

I mentioned it in their discord, but yea, this shouldn't have been a new server but instead a new way to play content from 1 to 90, while slowly giving you your skills as you level in whatever zone you'd choose.

It's pointless. Great if you have limited amounts of nostalgia. But utterly pointless.

Leveling/questing are HUGE part of the game. They take that away and expect it to be fun?

I popped on there briefly to see and wonder if there would be people actually working to group for content....and it was just people asking about tradeskilling

There's a new TLE server called "Origins" that is based on the 2006 version of the game. I didn't play during that time, so I'm not exactly sure how much it will be different than a regular TLE. Did anyone actually play back then? Will this server be worth subbing for?

It wont be worth subbing for, because they wont really be making a server like what the game was in 2006 for two reasons. One they have changed the game so much that going back functionally hasnt ever really trully worked for TLE servers. Two they monetize on the game a little different now, where they try to get you to sub, and sort of set up the game where you progress faster through paying them through their marketplace on top of it.

I vaguely recall the Desert expansion being fun but 80% of folks who tried the game left before getting there.

Also people telling Cuppycaek they'd help with the Fabled quests then never logging back in.

It was fucking terrible. The only reason people were hyped for the game at that time was because the GoD expansion in EQ1 was awful and over tuned and people wanted to get in on the ground level of eq2.

Performance aside, the itemization was not good, the combat was not good, most of the crafted spell and art skills didn't work, the AH kept having issues, mobs would bug out, etc.

A lot of people did enjoy the collections and the housing, and crafting at that time had a solid community around it and many friendships were formed due to the interdependency of crafting. Back in the day the Forge could kill ya, and every crafting profession needed 1 or 2 more feeding it mats.

You could also group with a higher lvl and it would Grey the zone out so you could run around and gather for days foe the rare crafting components.

EQ2 and FFXIV are the only two MMOs I ever upgraded a computer to play at launch, and both ended up being a clusterfuck

Didn't they say in the past that they could never do this because they lost all of the old code? What changed?

I have my doubts about it being actually old-school, anyways. It's probably still going to be post-LU19. They probably globally increased mob damage and XP and called it "oldschool."

I was first or second person to go FP -> Qeynos on my server at launch, shit took FOREVER and being stuck doing it all by myself was rough. But god dammit I wanted to be a dark elf when all my friends wanted to be goody two shoes.

Looks like they're doing a completely separate code base for this. I suspect this is a test to see if they can pull it off in EQ... or they're going to announce something similar for EQ. Some extra details for the EQ2 server from the devs in discord here:

Overall this is a pretty good sign for a future where these EQ TLPs do a Season of Discovery style approach

Not disagreeing with you, but in addition you will have to sub to even log in to any TLE server unless that's changed.

Did they mention anything about group exp debt? /cackle

I loved eq2 at launch, but back then I could play 70 hours a week and pushing through the shared xp debt, spell upgrades being rare drops, zone access quests, zones like nektulos actually being really dangerous etc was all a fun challenge. It felt like an achievement being one of the only people who could even zone into high level zones, have high level trade skills etc rang my bell back then.
Not anymore... Although I do still feel a minor urge to play this new TLE I would probably not enjoy it and I doubt it is even going to be true to the early days.

Lol shared experience debt. I had forgotten about that. I hopped off a cliff onto a little ledge to log off safely once and several group members auto followed me over, plummeting to their deaths. Yeah, great mechanic.

dont worry, it will only cost a few hundred station cash to get any experience debt removed.

The explanation that shared exp debt would encourage players to get better at the game, instead of just pariah'ing bad players, always gave me a chuckle
