I'd edit out Tarkin completely just to have a second for Jyn or Cassian to crack a smile or two in this movie

They could have used a little less Tarkin true. Simply because they didn't have the original actor and they were committed to not recasting him. You can't really cut him out completely though to have him just show up and clearly running the show in ANH. But they could have established the context for that with less screen time.

But I don't think Jyn and/or Cassian would have been presented as more upbeat in the exchange because I don't think either of them (in either of incarnations because both were slightly reworked in the re-shoots) were ever written that way. Jyn was originally presented with more of a presence and as more of a smart ass but they toned that back and fleshed out Cassian a bit more but his story was not one of a happy camper. He'd grown up fighting first against the Republic (he was a Separatist fighter in the late Clone Wars period) and then against the Empire. His side had lost the first war and it was looking like he was going to end up on the loosing side again. He was wrestling with the question of what the fuck had it all been for.

They were both shades of grey characters. If they had made one of them more of a traditional character archetype then that one could have been more easily relatable and needing less set up, which they could have devoted to the grey hat, whichever one that ended up being.

The only likable charters in this movie were Donnie Yen and Robot guy.

I personally don't need a character to be likeable. I do need to understand why they do what they do and how they fit into the larger scheme of things. They might become likeable after that, or someone you like to hate, or someone you can sympathize with on some level even if not completely, or an agent of some preferred outcome.

Hard to care about everyone in the movie dying when you don't have a reason to like them.

The whole reason the movie exists is because they told us people died for those plans. Ooooh
... That would be a great story!

Then you realize you don't give a shit about the people who died for those plans. Nothing of value was added or lost in the Star wars universe in this movie.

I can agree with this. While I was skeptical at first, I did enjoy the film. I'm hesitant about the Han Solo flick for that reason, yet another trip down memory lane.

Rogue One doesn't add anything other than a glimpse at what could be Star Wars without the Skywalkers.

Rogue One was a movie that didn't even need to be made. Everything before A New Hope was already known to the audience. Rebels died to steal away the plans. The end. This movie was on the same level of retard as trying to explain how the force works, explaining how the empire rose to power out of a senate hearing and a trade federation, that most of the Jedi were killed by "order 86" and every other level of stupid that has been Star Wars since the early 80's. Not every single fucking thing needs to be explained and shown to the audience. The force was better when it was completely unknown how it worked. The empire was better when they were the bad guys and the rebels were the good guys just because. Darth Vader was more of a badass before Haden Christensen showed up to make him ultra gay. The more they have tried to explain everything, the dumber it has become. This would be like doing a prequel to The LOTR where Tolkien writes a story where Sauron was abused as a child and that's what lead him to becoming so evil.

Come on dude.
What, he "86'ed" them dude. *Took em 8 parsecs out and buried them 6 feet deep. Or maybe it was only 6 parsecs, shit who can remember. Order 66? Nah can't be that stupid right?

That's like the order an idiot would have on his luggage.

I had no expectations going into this. I am not a big star wars fan, but I do love sci-fi in general.

I mostly enjoyed it, Definitely way better than the shit-show/rehash TFA was.

I would say it was about as entertaining as a 3rd tier MCU movie (like Thor 1-2)

Just to be clear, you do know that Silmarillion exists right? No child abuse, but Tolkien did write a story that included Saurons origin, and betrayal into evil, and following Melkor.
