Well, with season 6 of Game of Thrones now behind us, it doesn't seem like there were actually TOO many spoilers for Winds of Winter. Off the top of my head (as far as where the characters ended up this season), I think the show only covered about half a novel's worth of plot movement. Please don't take that as an invitation to discuss spoilers from the show (in the off chance that there are some hold outs that follow this thread). I'm just thinking out loud here.

Don't get me wrong, there were definitely some major plot spoilers, but it seems like most of the season was dedicated to putting all of the characters on (more or less) the same path that they were on at the end of Dance. There are many notable exceptions, of course, but again, no show>book spoilers in this thread!

Yeah I feel like only half of TWoW got spoiled by the show. Seems like there is a lot that should have happened, but didn't. I guess TWoW could end in the same places but it also has more loose ends to tie up. I am hoping that we spend a lot more time with Bran/WW in the book and some revelations in Oldtown by Sam would be nice.

Respectfully disagree.

The first half of Winds will be Dance Part 2, ie the parts that were in dance manuscript and cut because they were too long. These cover all of the released spoiler chapters and the followup chapters, ie conclusions to those storylines.

Those were all spoiled by the end of Season 5.

Season 6 completed all of winds and possibly more as they are setting the stage for the final 1.5 season, ie the stories conclusion, dream of spring (or whatever the final book+ ends up being). With a few exceptions (honestly I can only think of Sam's story in oldtown), the show has covered all of what will be winds, for the characters the show features. Obviously missing characters will have chapters and resolution, winds will go in to more depth and achieve similar outcomes, but I feel like season 6 completely spoiled winds + all the dream of spring excerpts that would of been teased out in the 9 year downtime between winds being released sometime in 2017-20 and dream sometime in 2026-2029.

the show creators also just reconfirmed 2 seasons and 13-15 episodes total remaining.

I'm hopeful there is still stuff in TWoW that wasn't spoiled but it doesn't seem likely.

Hm, yeah. I was thinking about the overall story, and forgot that we have many plots that were basically dropped in the show completely. Those are obviously going to have a huge impact on the length of the book. So you're probably right.

Sigh. Well my fantasy was nice while it lasted.

Is anyone else just planning to not read any new release until the series is complete (if ever)? I feel like it's just setting me up for disappointment otherwise. If I had known more about Martin and the pace he goes at, I wouldn't have begun the series after watching GoT S1.

Martin's pace was fine when he knew what he was writing about, the first 3 books were released in 1996, 1998, 2000. Yeah, it was just a fantasy version of the War of the Roses, but he knew where the story was going.

The problem is, he wrote himself in to a corner with the 5 year gap. He's been stuck trying to write 5 years of filler, introducing side characters and backstory to move the story along while his principle characters complete training montages. None of the characters he's introduced since then are all that relevant and nothing that happens dramatically affects the principle characters, which explains why it's been 16 years to write 2 books of filler. I think, once he gets past that, and can get back to the real story he'll complete the last 2 segments in normal time, dany's invasion, then the white walker invasion.

No. That's stupid. There's thousands of books out there worth reading. If a series is worth reading I'll pick it back up when the next book is out. Even if you're one of those people that thinks the 4th and 5th books are worse than used toilet paper it's absolutely worth reading the first three. Even if GRRM dies tomorrow.

Instead just jump in line with everyone saying FUCK GRRM FUCK ROTHFUSS FUCK ABERCROMBIE FUCK ERRYONE!!!!! Denying yourself excellent stories isn't worth it. People get so up their own asses about this subject. Read the excellent book, move on to another, come back for the next one when it's available.

I pretty much feel this way myself. Even if he never writes another book, I'm glad I've read the one's he's written all of them except Dance more than once.

You'd never get an honest answer of course, but I'd be curious how many hardliners actually adhere to that philosophy and don't just suggest it to be edgy (ie they read the shit and then pretend like it's beneath them to read an incomplete series).

I am one of those 'hardliners'. Not because of GRRM, though he has contributed to it - No, he does not owe me anything. It is his life, etc. But it sucks waiting forever for something you are waiting for to come out.

I have not read the new Sanderson series or the Name of the Wind - I hear they are amazing, but I like to 'binge' on my entertainment. If I enjoy a series, I engross myself in it. It becomes the only sort of media I will consume for a few days, at least on the first reading. No games or movies or television. Just that book if it is good enough to swallow me in. In later readings, I will pace myself. Some people have told me it is immature, that I refuse to read a series as it comes out, that I will not go into it unless it is 'complete', but books give me so much more than a movie or a television show and only a few games have every given me close to what a good series has given me in terms of... desire(?) to experience more of the setting/world.
