In older iterations of the game I had certain things on repeat build and never had a problem with starvation. Although realistically on stuff like planks you should be building to X instead of repeat building anyway.

Any brand new character should be able to play all the way through to 60 without ever stopping to have to farm drops or gold. Once you hit 60 it's possible that you would have to farm a bit before you could progress on Inferno (max difficulty) but the game also makes it easier to farm gear once...
