I think the official definition of retro game is being old enough to drink in all 50 states. So Ultima Online is retro in 5 weeks!

@moonarchia In the US version, if you max your level, you have 12 hp, his hits only do 1 damage and you need to hit him less than 10 times, so you can just dps race him without even having to heal. In PAL you have 8 hp, his hits do 3 damage and you need to hit him 30+ times....

Retro Game of the Month November 2017: Soul Blazer (SNES)

As I linked earlier from the Cutting Room Floor, the ending screen has been altered in the US/EU version to feature a less anime looking character, but in doing so, some of its animation (it's animation? :p) got canned. Japanese version here (spoiler obviously). US/EU version here (still spoiler).

Game Over man, Game Over. More seriously, the whole Batman soundtrack is crazy. The drum lines! EDIT: There is a whole level in Rygar where this is the music... That might be taking electronic minimalism a bit too far. This sky castle theme, on the other hand... damn.

    Retro Gaming Thread

I'ma let you finish, but Batman has the best soundtrack on the NES! There are some great tracks in Rygar (the cave music!), but there is also a number of questionable tunes! Anyway, today to test my God Gamer theory I decided to get humbled by Trojan. It's an action game with a combat system...

It seems sleep is for the weak... I thought I would play a little Rygar and ended up "beating" the game several hours later... Rygar is a 2D side scrolling action game with elements of rpg / exploration (levels are connected with each other through a hub map in top down view - a couple levels...

Continuing in my NES backlog I played through Kickle Cubicle an action puzzle game by Irem. It's a pretty sweet and forgiving game since it has unlimited continues and it makes you restart right at the level you were. Should you decide to not continue, you can even get a password for the level...

Poll December's Retro Game of the Month

Getting the game is no issue (couple bucks on Steam), it's just the Murphy's Law effect that I found amusing. I also don't have Maniac Mansion, Nox and Earthworm Jim, but that's less surprising :)

Poll December's Retro Game of the Month

I was checking which game I own and which I don't and of course I have Phantasy Star 1,2,3 but not IV... It also made me realize that I don't own the Beyond Oasis cart, but that I actually beat it on the official emulator! I totally forgot about that!

    Twitch.tv

I did not know MXC, a comedy voice-over of japanese show Takeshi's Castle, but amusingly the exact same concept existed around here in the late '80s/early '90s with some swiss comedians doing some ridiculous voice-over for American Gladiators!

Beat Faxanadu. This game is rough. The least satisfying thing about the game I would say is that everything reset once you leave a screen. So if you beat the boss of a dungeon, a reward spawns, you leave the screen, come back, the boss is there again. This gap between the story that the game is...

I had a friend in high school that could do that, his specialty was jazz improvisation so I guess it comes with the territory. The most impressive thing for me is remembering on the fly all those tunes, even if she gets to pick and choose from the many suggestions in chat.

Zelda: I think the GBA Minish Cap is available on 3DS. Never played it, supposedly very good. Mario: not sure. Dragon Quest: I found Dragon Quest IX a bit lame, but I would recommend the DS remakes of IV, V and VI, especially V, Hand of the Heavenly Bride (a masterpiece of efficient...

Once you get the pattern of the falling blocks, it's not hard but that's so long and boring...The only up side is that it's not an autoscroller so you can turn into a bat with Alucard and get out of there earlier (or almost skip the whole thing if you have enough hearts). Anyway I managed to...

Long story short, I was rummaging through my box of NES games looking for Tetris (don't ask...) and realized, much to my surprise, that I own Castlevania III. 'Cool!', I thought, 'Let's try that!' I am not sure just yet if it was a great idea or a terrible mistake. As a very late NES game...

Retro Game of the Month November 2017: Soul Blazer (SNES)

@McCheese The ring dropping magic one shots the hands, the end of the left to right sword swing of the hero tends to hit twice for some reason and you only need to have the herb equipped when your hp reaches zero. So just stay on the left side of the upper deck, drop rings on the hands, slash at...

    Gerrymandering Supreme Court Case

I don't understand how showing the outcome of a gerrymandered map is somehow proof that gerrymandering has no effect. I also fail to see how federal level is relevant to a electoral map redrawing discussion unless I missed all these state boundaries changes that happen between elections...

You gain about 1 atk/def per level and some hp. But unless you skipped a lot of nests and/or did not went back to kill the nests of monsters you could not kill at first, no grinding is needed really.

I am sure that with a rested head you will understand better how the fight works and win with ease. It's really just about understanding what is going on and doing the right thing. When you do you hardly take any damage.

Deathtoll status: slain! I did not time myself, but it took three sessions to beat the game so probably less than 10 hours. Things flowed pretty smoothly throughout. Let me tell you what's OP: the double damage bracelet that melts bosses and that lame looking ring dropping magic. Killed the bosses of the first two area. As I remembered it's a bit on the grindy side and not much of a challenge (I guess it challenges you to not be reckless). It's not unpleasant though and the town building / dream exploring is charming. EDIT: 4 way movement feels a bit NESish though...

Brag time: out of the 22 games mentioned yet, I own 18 and beat 14! That being said, I'll take part if the game picked is not garbage tier like Donkey Kong Country (I thought it was crap then and still thought it was crap when I tried it again recently).

@Kiroy @SeanDoe1z1 I am not sure input lag is the right word here since the controllers are corded, but there is a possibility of display lag. That being said, most TV have a "game mode" where display lag is dramatically reduced to the point of being unnoticeable unless you are a speedrunner...

That's the dirty secret of the game industry: the no longer gamers is a much bigger target than the gamers. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

About the 3D in this movie, I feel it is one of the very rare case where it makes the movie better instead of making it worse, mainly because it works well with some of the themes of the movie (facticiousness/reality) and it works well with Villeneuve's solemn direction, as 3D reinforces the...
