    What did you just read?

Would love to hear of your opinion on Karenina when you're done. War and Peace is probably the best fiction book I've ever read - it's also not the glacial, ponderous beast that everybody assumes it is (at least until the last chapter). Reading All the President's Men by Carl Bernstein and...

    Dark Souls 3

Sorceror playthrough continues to proceed painlessly, thanks to Raw Astora SS, but I think it's about to get a lot harder. Raw's limitations are gonna become more of an issue, and my god sorcery is weak as fuck right now - so weak I'm not even using it.

    Dark Souls 3

Thanks! That page linked the article below, which I also quite liked. It starts out with the usual unsucessful attempt at articulating the ineffable beauty of the game's world, but it gets interesting when he starts talking about a real-life inspiration for the game's multiplayer. Souls...

Wow, didn't know that. I bet that's an awesome story - will read up on it.

    Dark Souls 3

To the extent that the existence of its target demographic was uncertain, maybe. But the game WAS great.

    Dark Souls 3

Err, that's more than a little hyperbolic. 1) The worst entry in the series is the one he didn't oversee. 2) Even that one is really, really good, and the ones he DID work on are superb. 3) So superb that it isn't even clear to me which one he "got lucky" on.

    Dark Souls 3

Yeah I never found a weapon I fell in love with. Used Washing Pole and Anri's sword mostly, as both worked well with Dex/Luck. Anri's sword is quick and has a great moveset, but I felt like a vagina wielding such a tiny fucking weapon. Washing Pole wrecked bosses with its bleed effect. My new...

Finally beat it. Time to play it again!

    Dark Souls 3

Lemme know if it's fun at all. I can beat the game at any time now and not sure if I wanna roll another character or start on ng+
  15. D

    Dark Souls 3

Oh, yeah. If its any consolation, that section of Irithyl Valley and the caves in Smouldering lake are the hardest areas in the game, and by fucking far.

    Dark Souls 3

Three things. First, wtf? Get more time, fgt. Second, wtf? I was under the impression you were my Bloodborne bro, what with your frequent claim to shieldless Bloodborne brohood. Third, wtf? Tabulated lists communicate more authority when bullet points are added, so here's another...
  17. D

    Dark Souls 3

Yeah, I'm really close to beating it as well. Is there any reason not to? I'm not at all ready to move on to NG+, but beating the game doesn't close any doors, does it?

Yeah, I'll never be any good because I'm always drunk when playing it.

    Dark Souls 3

Bleed seems is crazy good against bosses in this game. Couldn't believe how quickly Dancer went down on first attempt - I think bleed basically doubled or tripled my damage.
  20. D

    Dark Souls 3

Yeah, didn't care for the zone - the Dragon Aerie from DS2 was a lot more striking. As for the Nameless King... yeah, 5 attempts and no dice. He's tough as fuck.

    Dark Souls 3

That moment when you're 10 minutes past a bonfire, have a fuckton of souls and are sick of the physical resistance of an enemy you assume will be vulnerable to fire, so you equip some firebombs, back out of the menu, hit the back button too many times and backstep off a cliff, then later find...

    Dark Souls 3

I personally think this game's midgame is comparable in difficulty to Dark Souls II dlc, but if I were to concede that it isn't I'd argue that you're comparing a just-launched Vanilla game to the hardest added content in the series. As for an "extra" winter area - wtf, I think I must have missed...

    Dark Souls 3

Ahh, so actually timing it worked for you? My understanding of plunging attacks was that as soon as you swing, you're locked in the animation until you hit the ground, but I guess I've never really fallen far enough while attacking to be able to draw any inferences. Anyway, that's why I tried to...

    Dark Souls 3

Being intentionally vague for people who haven't reached the area yet, but I just attempted a boss, the stairway to whom kept spamming me with "Try plunging attack" messages that didn't have appraisal counts and hence were not written by players, so I took them seriously, climbed waaaay up and...

    Dark Souls 3

Build options are more constrained in this game - and I think this will be inimical to its longevity - because the stat investment required for viable casting renders hybrid builds much, much harder to develop. So if you're not going magic, you're going strength, dexterity or both unless you...

    Dark Souls 3

Might as well not consider this a Souls game if you progress that way, because while this is probably (imo) the hardest game in the series, its bosses are mostly a joke. Aldritch and the Pontiff took maybe 5 tries each, but I don't think I've died more than once to any other. The areas...

    Dark Souls 3

Unless you're way more leveled/geared than I was...good luck. Went there at level 40 or so and found it to be the hardest area in the series.

    Dark Souls 3

Made some crazy progress on my playthrough today. Killed the two remaing Cinders, killed Dancer, cleared two of the three remaining optional areas + Bosses, got my washing pole to +9 (holding off on maxing it for now) and hatched preliminary plans for other weapons. Game got way, waaaaaay easier...

    Dark Souls 3

Agreed. It's also in my experience the longest game in the series, even before the DLC that's included.

    Dark Souls 3

It's regrettable that you'll be playing an inferior game, but it's still amazing and well worth playing.

    Dark Souls 3

Lol, took more than two attempts. Basically it took me until I was able to quell the instinctual urge to run like hell when he summoned his clone, because it looked somewhat like a charge attack. Once I realized I could kill the clone before it could move, the fight wasn't too bad. He was the...

    Dark Souls 3

I'm about to face Irithyll boss (Did Lake first) and thus far I'd agree. There hasn't been a boss that's killed me more than twice so far but I got humbled repeatedly by trash mobs in Smouldering Lake and the first part of Irithyll (the second half was considerably easier). The underground...

    Bloodborne

There's no armor upgrading, but some sets are considerably better than others for certain bosses/levels. You can equip runes once you beat the boss of Hemwick (being deliberately vague here so as not to spoiler, in case you care). Edit: good call with BSB. He's pretty tough.

    Dark Souls 3

Yeah, just hit up a quest checklist on Gamefaqs for the first time and I think I've been obsessive enough to have progressed missable questlines appropriately thus far, but seriously - fuck that list. One of the best things about this series is its tendency to disseminate its lore in abstruse...

So far I'm at 20 Vig, Vit, Dex, 17 End and 16 Str. Gonna get End to 20 then pump dex. I hear there are respec items, so it's harder to screw up than Bb/Dks1. Still not sure if I wanna go Str or Dex, but my favorite weap so far is the Lothric Sword which scales better with dex. Ultimatelt...

    Dark Souls 3

Christ, really? Tried it again right after the first Dark Souls with the intention of going for the platinum and its technical limitations disuaded me within a few hours, but that was back in 2011. If the framerate goes as low as you claim, there's no way anybody sane could enjoy it in 2016 -...
