Do You Watch Videos Posted In Music Threads?

How many people watch, or listen to, videos posted here? I rarely do. My guess is most of these threads are just embedded videos that are rarely, if ever, watched. It'd be cool if we could get more descriptions of the music, background info, similar artists, and discussion, instead of just...

The Writing Thread - Post Shit You've Written (And Criticize What's Posted)

First, thank you so much for your time and your criticism. I really appreciate it. The piece is intended to be the beginning of a story about playing EQ instead of going to class. I'm driving to Walmart to pick up EQ. It wasn't for a class or anything of that nature. I mentioned various...

    DOTA 2

I've played a few long games with PL and Medusa in em. IIRC, it seemed Medusa's ult would clear the illusions, but in 2 or 3 seconds a new illusion army would build up. Since then I haven't liked her as a PL counter.

    "Wool" series by Hugh Howey...

Has anyone read this? I haven't but I'll probably pick it up soon. This article piqued my interest. It's one of those self published success stories. It started as a short story and grew into a serial. Now it's collected in a book. http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/b...s_to_fans.html

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

I do. I'll try to explain what I mean by the philosophy rabbit hole. Two people, Al and Bob, are discussing theft. Al asks Bob whether theft is immoral and Bob says yes, always. Al then asks Bob what about a starving person stealing food to eat. Bob isn't sure. They have an interesting...

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

You have to follow the whole thread man. I started by writing that I didn't have sympathy for pirates. Many people disagreed, commenting on how fucked up the media providers are. While I agree the media providers can be shitty and shady, I felt many of the comments about media providers...

Did you not understand me when I said I was not interested in discussing that issue? I care about the empirical, not the normative.

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

It's pretty simple really. Gosh, you know your concepts are really interesting Mikhail, but unfortunately for you, there are laws against stealing information and data.

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

No, that's not how the U.S. legal system works. There's no reason to discuss the matter of sympathy for those who illegally download content with one who does not believe information can be stolen. Perhaps one day your social will be stolen and you'll change your mind.

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

The point was that theft does not always require the original to be taken. Mikhail, I'm not sure what you mean with your question as to whether information can be stolen. Legally? Most certainly. Philosophically? My short answer is yes, but I have no desire to discuss philosophy...

Pharma co. A comes up with a formula for male birth control, which proves to be wildly popular. Pharma co. A, which spent a good deal of time and money developing the formula, keeps it secret. Pharma co. B has one of its own employees pose as a job seeker, and apply for work at Pharma co. A...

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

Roads cost money to build and money to maintain. If distribution was "essentially free" cable companies would not have a strangle hold on the market because any upstart could go lay their own essentially free cable. Or build and launch their own essentially free satellite. Sure, the initial...

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

Lithose, I think you and I will have to agree to disagree. I doubt we'll come to a meeting of the minds when you're on both sides of certain issues. First you say there are last mile problems and economies of scale problems, then you say distribution is essentially free. First you say no one is...

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

Few things. First, I don't think it's obvious what the profits of changing the content distribution system would be. Like I said earlier, I'd love to see some data re how much cable companies would have to charge to per channel if they offered them a la carte to make as much money as they do...

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

I'm not the one trying to use the market to defend anything. People were using market failures to justify piracy. I wouldn't illegally download content if providers would make it available exactly how/when I want it at such and such a price, the argument goes. But the market not offering people...

5 major ISPs roll out the "six strikes" policy regarding illegal downloads.

It 's not so simple as market forces (leaving aside the issue of whether theft is a market force) pushing bad TV off the air. They are offering a one-size fits all product to customers with individual tastes. For instance, 95% of my tv watching consists of 4 or 5 channels. My foolhardy guess is...

An internet connection and not much else will get you most of that. Jeopardy is on ABC so you can watch it free on broadcast television. I would like more choice too, but you're downplaying the available options. There's your cable provider(s), Dish, Direct TV, Internet, Netflix, etc. First, the margins are irrelevant. The margins certainly don't change the legality of the act and they don't change the morality either when one...

I think I agree with your sentiment but haven't media companies largely embraced the internet distribution method? We have iTunes, Steam etc. Radiohead, NIN, Louis C.K., and Aziz Ansari, among others, have used direct distribution. And I'm not convinced that, on balance, pirates help. On the...

Anyone have experience with the iPhone 5? How is the battery life? I've seen some complaints about it online.
