    Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Saw this yesterday with the wife. It was definitely not what I expected and felt like a really fucked up Princess Pride (the real life vs. book storyline aspect). Pretty good suspense/drama...loved Michael Shannon's role! BTW, you may want to miss the opening credits although I thank...

Should I lie on my business school application and say I'm gay?

Personal recommendation, unless you really see a big advantage going to a specific business school I would just get an MBA and not sweat it. I've moved up without one into an upper management position pulling $130k a year (with a EE major) and honestly could push a tier up without additional...

    Mist farewell thread

In all seriousness, this forum is great because of the callous assholes that exist (from all sides). No one should ever get butthurt and leave, because then it'll just be a bunch of assholes that agree with each other and where is the fun in that!

    Arrival (2016)

Glad to hear this is turning out well. I had bought some awesome seats a few weeks ago, then found out I have to work this weekend (FML). Will be a week, but can't wait to see it! Love some good sci-fi!

To be fair, it is Thandie Newton; have had a thing for her since Interview with the Vampire! I do see him (asian dude) being one of the first story arcs to accept that the host have become self-aware.

Yeah, the first think I thought of was "gee, why not hook the priest up with some l33t beta infoz and tell him the demon's name is Pazuzu". It does seem like the show is really pushing for something bigger than the original though. It's been enjoyable so far.

    Investing General Discussion

Has anyone messed around with personalcapital.com? I caught wind of it a little over a month ago during college football and signed up for the free side of it (they interface with your other investments, credit cards, bank, mortgage, etc. and give you a breakdown of the overall portfolio vs...

    Whats rustling your jimmies?

I will actively block those people - "I did not get there 10 minutes early to let your ass in"! The best is the stare down at the end and the anger in their faces (you have to stare and shake your head no...not happening). It is one of my small pleasures in an hour long commute. In a way, I...

1kg of antimatter is insane. We have no way to produce anywhere near bulk quantities. Just goes to highlight how truly extreme interstellar travel is. As big of a nay-sayer as I may seem, I am not against the idea that there is some FTL travel out there. Now the small task of finding out how...

Exactly, it would only take a bit over 58 years to hit the Speed of Light if it tracked a linear path. However, as mass increases asymptotically as you approach c, the energy requirements on the top end get ridiculous. Realistically, you'd accelerate / decelerate for ~50 years and the rest...

    Woolygimp's Blog

Really appreciated your view and agree that at some level we have to figure out how to break humanity out of the vicious cycle of greed driven motivators and more into one where we look to help others. It's a hard sell, especially since the world tends to turn us all into cynical assholes...

I think their could be some truth to this. The interesting problem for me is how our financial systems are based around lending with the expectation of interest on return. Profit largely driven by volume of sales, which drives consumption (requiring raw materials and energy). Humanity also...

I've always thought an interstellar ark (or arks) would be the way for us to reach other stars. It would take thousands of generations, and in all likelihood the end-product would not be the same species as modern human due to significant environmental pressures, but the tech probably isn't far...

It would be a super long project. The fastest object man has ever made (the Juno spacecraft) travelled 165,000 miles per hour (45 miles per second) as it was pulled into orbit of Jupiter. The nearest stars are ~4 light-years away which would take damn near 16,000 years for us just to reach at...

Assuming the density of this planet is about the same as our own would put it's radius at ~6920 km. The star is 12% of the sun's mass at 7.5 million km. The calculated tidal force proportionally compared to our own would only be a tad over 600x stronger. Surf's up!
