    The Astronomy Thread

The Everyday Astronaut guy from YouTube was just on Lex Fridman's podcast and he said that the Kessler Syndrome would make the low earth orbit altitudes unusable for 5-10 years but it would eventually clear out but GPS and geosynchronous satellites wouldn't be affected.

Maybe, but 95% of people are dead or gone now. The more specialized something is, the less likely that someone who knows about it will still be around, and those CNC mills last for 30 years but the tools don't, or coolant/lubricant. Most of them run on 3 phase power too so you don't just plug...

Sure but what if it won't work without an o-ring? Where are you going to get a new one? And it's not a standard one you can go find at the Pep Boys, it's a special order from some company in China that doesn't exist anymore and you don't even have any way of knowing that. It's definitely...

I think his point is that having a "working understanding" of stuff isn't good enough anymore. It's not that you're stupid, it's that things have gotten so complex that everyone is a specialist. Back in the 50's if you were a good mechanic you could work on any vehicle, and make it work with...

Alternative doctors have been pumping stuff up people's asses for decades. Sometimes they even give you some bentonite pills beforehand which makes a bunch of crazy looking shit come out so you feel extra good about the "cleanse".

To be fair, since they are so close to the dam, it's possible that there are a few people in the colony who used to work at the power plant which would up the chances.

    The Last of Us

If the generator was directly powering the residential line that fed the town then the transformers would already be there. I doubt that's the case though. The power plant probably feeds a transmission line and there's a substation that steps it down to 30kv or whatever is on a residential...

It doesn't stop turning though. It keeps turning but the metal parts that are rubbing together wear each other into shavings at a much higher rate.

    The Last of Us

Mechanical parts that aren't lubricated don't just stop. They destroy themselves. You can test this by draining the oil out of your car's engine and then running it until it stops.

Parts wear out on all machines. I just googled an article about how Iceland's hydropower is the envy of the world with its 99% uptime but 99% still means it's down for 3 days a year on average and that's with all the proper maintenance being done.

    The Last of Us

I might buy that it was shut down and they powered it back up again but not that it ran continuously for all that time. Not being manned 24/7 (but presumably electronically monitored) is a far cry from no one has set foot in there for 20 years.

    The Last of Us

The explanation for the electricity was that somehow the hydroelectric plant is still working after being abandoned for 20 years and the power lines are still intact? That's even less likely than a communist utopia.

    Car ?'s

It's pretty amazing what it costs for options. I have a bare-bones F-350 coming from the factory next month that only has functional options (differential lock, skid plates, etc.) and it's $65k. Your buddy is spending $35k on leather seats and some chrome and a few electronic gadgets.

Don't go to home depot. If they do have anything it will be ridiculously overpriced. Go to a real metal shop/welding supply place. They will have what you want and it won't be that expensive. You do need to clean it well because it will be coated with oil to keep it from rusting. After...

The reason the fungus couldn't infect humans was that the body temp was too high for it. Because of climate change, the fungus was forced to evolve to tolerate higher temperatures, which also allowed it to survive in human bodies. I don't think it was ever said that it "needed" the warmer...

That has to be pretty high on the list of undignified ways to die. My sister in law was once attacked by a normal sized rooster and it spurred her hard enough to give her a bruise through her insulated coveralls so I can imagine that a 15 lb chicken could get a lucky spur and hit an artery.
