    The Beer Thread

I had a "Sweet Baby Jesus" the other day, one of Duclaw's beers. It was the first peanut butter flavored beer I've ever had, so I don't have much to compare it to. That said, it was absolutely delicious and tasted like drinking a Reese's Cup.

Answer the question above you, no matter what it is

This is a really interesting question and one that I've been asked several times, as I've spent time abroad. Without going into great detail, I think the biggest reason is that simply saying "American" is an extremely vague term. What does "American" mean, anyway? I'm a white, middle class guy...

I don't know, that doesn't seem so far fetched. I work at a desk all day and teach for about 3 hours each night. I'm lucky to take a total of 50 steps throughout my entire office day, but during teaching there isn't a single minute where I'm sitting, and rarely am I even standing still. If I'm...

    Garlic

My local grocery store has garlic marked as $1 for 2 cloves of garlic. However, when you use the self-checkout aisles and press the "Garlic" button, it is apparently set to $1 per pound, which means I get my cloves of garlic for pennies. Think of how many people I can save (or murder, depending...

It certainly is a lot easier to be motivated to wake up early and hit the gym when it's nice and warm. This past week or so has been especially brutal with the super cold temperatures and snow; I've really had to force myself to trudge out of the house. In other news, I definitely noticed the...

How do you help people with finances?

Sadly, you can't help people learn how to be "good" with money. The only way people learn is to hit hard times and learn through experience. Even then, some people are still unable to grasp basic fiscal responsibility.

I had completely forgotten about the whole Pierce debacle. It took me a minute to realize he wasn't there, but I can't say I missed him, either. I like the new old guy and I think he'll be even better than Pierce. Honestly, Pierce was only occasionally funny and his whole racist schtick had...

    Community

Community Colleges don't pay very well. Not only are the salaries considerably lower than a "real" university, but the vast majority of teachers at community colleges are adjunct (i.e. part time). In my department there are about 70 teachers, but only 3 are full time and get paid a salary. Even...

    The Hobbit

Balrog would have destroyed Smaug, no question. Balrog is technically equal to Sauron in that they are both servants of Morigoth (see:http://tolkien.cro.net/balrogs/sauronvs.html). Of course, Sauron's constant focus on growing his power made him stronger over the long run while the Balrog was...

My local Walmart smells like curry and has a constant police presence. I haven't shopped there in a long time, either. However, the poor saps who live in the middle of bumfuck-nowhere-flyover states don't have many other options for shopping, I believe. I wish someone would make a little...

    The Hobbit

Given that the reason Gandalf wanted Smaug out of the way was to prevent his "use" (I think that's the word used in the books) by Sauron, I always figured Sauron and his forces were much more powerful than the dragon. Not necessarily in terms of physical or combative ability, but just due to...

I have 3 younger cousins: 16, 13, and 11. At Thanksgiving I was talking to them and I could barely understand half the words coming out of their mouths.
