    Diablo 4 / IV / IIII / Fore / Cope / Seethe

Half the people around here want a literal engine update on DII and hated the changes made from early D3 to release. This is more or less exactly what the public has been asking for. I haven't seen anyone complain about the D3 engine, just the art style, mechanics, and itemization, all of which...

Eh. The line between "sequel" and "expansion that resets almost everything" is just semantics and price.

Clean break, less baggage, lore and mechanics reset.

Well, runes confirmed. Looks like they just went full fan appeasement mode.

This version looks better than the gameplay trailer clips. Incremental improvement over D3, but there are some definite differences in detail and lighting.

Same thing, IMO. Some ability to target which items you wanted to find would go a long way.

Diablo 3 - Reaper of Souls

I used to think I wanted an Auction House, but having seen a few implementations in different games I'd really rather they tune the drop rates so that the good items are directly obtainable solo. It's just more fun to find the items yourself. I don't particularly care if this "trivializes"...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

Sorry, I was assuming that you were using effort as a proxy for understanding, which I would have said was the point of education. If we just wanted to have people who could tip at restaurants without a calculator we could just teach a couple heuristics and be done with it. The general lack of...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

No one is really saying this, either. What's being proposed is that balance be pushed towards exercises that teach conceptual relationships. It's a great way to measure how well he can memorize things, which is not the same as how well he understands the subject. I'm intimately familar with...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

Yeah, we'll know everyone's pitching in and we're learning math correctly when our kids are killing themselves at the proper rate. You guys must enjoy pain. I got damn near zero benefit from memorization. If it's a byproduct of repeated problem solving, fine, but bulk memorization as a primary...

Yeah. I'm also the guy driving an 18 year old car because it still works and I don't give a shit about cars. Looking back, it's pretty clear that my consumption habits were formed growing up during some lean years when my dad's business wasn't doing well. My wife is similar (child of...

I owned a home in which I thought I was going to live indefinitely. Life changed, ended up moving after seven years and lost mid five figures between the maintenance, flat market, and transaction costs. Currently rent. Where I live presently, net of everything it's just flat-out cheaper to rent...

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

I've been doing this for eight or ten years or something, since when I first set up Plex I didn't have a dedicated NAS. I run Ubuntu on the NUC and it works perfectly, casting to tablets/phones and ChromeCasts. I don't do uncompressed BluRays or 4k or anything, so YMMV on those fronts.

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

I'd argue the problem is that most people come out on the far side of repetitive, boring work being able to grind out rote computations for structured problems but not grasping the abstract principles enough to pull off improvisational real-world applications and understand what conclusions you...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

For me it works better in the other order. While it's true that repetition eventually leads to some level of understanding, in the context of academics where students are constantly min/maxing their time investments it's not obviously the case that conceptual fluency is completely achieved by...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

YMMV, I guess. This approach led me to memorize a lot of shit, be able to superficially execute in a battery of intermediate applications, and stop pursuing upper level coursework in college because the conceptual complexity exceeded my ability to memorize and I didn't have an intuitive...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

I'm a fan of project-based learning as opposed to one-size-fits-all classrooms for this reason. If you motivate the participants towards a goal and give them tools to self-direct they can experiment and figure out what feels the best for them. Now if only we could figure out how to manage that...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

Let's not kid ourselves. Most people are math idiots now. I run into people in a professional setting in data-driven careers who clearly failed to absorb critical core concepts of numeracy. I'm fine with this. Rote memorization isn't very useful. I'd argue the opposite, personally. I've...

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

Yeah. If you read the preceding lesson the solution is generally trivial. They're just looking for a particular method to which we weren't privvy. People outside the class aren't the target audience.

Are you smarter than a 4th grader?

For all the popular hate about new math, I've actually been fairly impressed with how my second grader is learning. He's slower on getting the answer and occasionally has trouble with "simple" questions, but is clearly developing a better conceptual understanding of the principles than I had at...

    Without knowing the intended methods: 5 (no multiplication): Factor 12 and 16. Result is 4 x 4 x 3 = 4 x 4 x 3, therefore true. 6 (no division): Be a smartass and multiply by the reciprocals.

    Autonomous Systems

I think the idea is human time savings, where density would be a good thing. Instead of a human making 20 stops in serial over half an hour, you could have the delivery van drive to a location and a battery of drones would detach deliver light packages to a dozen houses at once in the space of a...

Better but varies wildly by kid and how much of a consistent hardass you are. My son would make bargains pretty early (~2 years) and hold to them, but my daughter (now 4) is more like yours and will come back with "Fine then, no dessert." You may not compromise when the negotiation is over...
