This is me. I sometimes catch myself complaining internally if my wife puts on a few pounds and then I realize what a hypocrite I am. (I'm currently 1/4 through losing 30 lbs., which sadly involves not eating aforementioned baked goods.) Other factors: Clothes stop fitting. Doctor starts...

You can't spike them, meaning inverting them and driving the top of their head straight down into the ground parallel to their spine. (No wrestling pile drivers.) They're worried about spinal compression. You can give them concussions all day as long as they're not perpendicular to the ground...

Yeah, do yourself a favor and google image search "table saw injuries" so that you're suitably scared. There are a few things not obvious to newbies that are critical for keeping your hands connected to your body. DO NOT cheap out and buy an old saw without a riving knife, or one with a wobbly...

Mine are 7 and 4. Neither one ate much between 3.5 and 5. Once my son hit his second growth spurt he turned into a disposal unit. Seconds at every meal, plus he's asking to bring a snack to school. My daughter sometimes skips dinner voluntarily for lack of being hungry.

I'm back on the wagon again. I had a catastrophic knee injury a couple years ago that basically eliminated my ability to do normal exercise outside of swimming and walking. My weight started creeping up. Last month I realized that I was 20-25 lbs over my previous healthy baseline, looked like a...

Marriage and the Power of Divorce

This selection bias has to be a big factor with the aggregate statistics. (No, I'm not saying that all divorced people are shitty. It seems obvious that shitty people are more likely to both get divorced and be lousy parents, though.)

This is not true in my case taking into account the difference in monthly premiums and tax deductibility of the HSA contributions (at least if you're maxing them, which you should). The HDHP is categorically cheaper as long as I can manage my own cash flow. Depending on your premium structure YMMV.

Apparently she has celiac's disease. If it's a real case and not "gluten sensitivity", that can seriously fuck you up, even aside from the perverse unhealthy Hollywood body issues. Be careful with the math on that. I preferentially use a HDHP PPO with HSA compared to a regular PPO. At least for the plans available to me, if you take into account the HSA tax deduction, the increased premiums for the traditional plan, and differential reimbursement rates for amounts...

    Investing General Discussion

Are the parents competent investment-wise? My grandfather had some money that he wanted to pass to the grandkids and he just wrote us a yearly check under the single-year gift limit. While we were minors our parents opened investment accounts in our name where they were the custodians. We took...

    Avengers: Endgame (2019)

The impression I got was that the return point was dictated by the landing platform. That's why Ant-man didn't get back until the rat activated his van, and how as the team was collecting the gems they could all have missions of different lengths and return together. That expectation was also...

Possibly, but returning the stones was only fair in the spirit of not screwing over unrelated timelines. The main timeline had already lost its stones so that exposure didn't change.

Only after 1000's of years. That's what light-years mean. After 23 days the signal has only gone 23 light-days. (As long as we're pretending that practical reality matters in a comic book movie.)

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

This was an informative read (though a bit dry) for anyone interested in neutrinos. It's more about the history of the theories, personalities, and historical episodes surrounding them than the science per se, although there's plenty of that. Neutrino - Frank Close

Sounds like a win/win. Prospectively, whether an idea is good or not is not reliably predictable. The best ideas are often the most off-the-wall but somehow magically land in some kind of sweet spot. You need a metric fuckton of bad ideas in order to locate the good ones. Might as well outsource...
