Long story, but the suit was designed by him to go against threats like Darkseid. It runs off of his metabolism, so if he pushes to hard, he dies. So the suit was warning him he was risking death.

I missed that Batman soloed Darkseid yet again at the end of 2014, in Batman and Robin #37.
