Are there enough of certain types to reasonably set up an encounter with multiple of the same thing? That was the main thing I always shook my head at miniatures for. What's the point when...

Yep. I'm huge into tactical combat games, so I really dislike not having a grid map for any combat encounter. Then at that point, the more detail the better, so walls/cover/etc an be accurately depicted.
