Pit bulls - The Breed of Peace

I'm getting paid 1k plat per post to convince nerds that if a pitbull wants them dead, there's probably not much they can do to stop it.

    The Astronomy Thread

What this article doesn't say is what the different agencies use that isn't UTC. Describing "moon time" as a time zone is misleading because it's not about what time moon farmers should wake up to milk their moon cows. Instead the problem is about relativistic time dilation. It's a mess but for...

Pit bulls - The Breed of Peace

That's a good question. I'd say no. A family looking to protect what they have might enjoy having their own monster, so that's good for them against other humans. The roving bands of ownerless-pitbulls would basically be apex predators in most suburbia areas. Any benefit of pitbull on mushroom...

Pit bulls - The Breed of Peace

No but I did laugh at it. I feel like both breeds are energetic and good-natured and merely unlikely to turn into elderly-eating, fireman-fighting deathbeasts. Watching a pitbull shrug off a full power pick-axe swing from a trained firefighter really crystallizes how fucked you probably are if...

EQ TLP - Oakwynd (Evolving Ruleset Progression Server)

It's already happening. The attrition from older people dying in EQ is probably several standard deviations above the mean compared to MMOs. It'll never attract large groups of new, younger players. And it doesn't really have to.

    Kerbal Space Program 2

I never got into KSP. Why are they creating KSP2 instead of building on KSP1? Both use Unity, but are there other major limitations to KSP1 that are motivating them to remake instead of improve?

    Hogwarts Legacy

I could see the gameplay being compelling if you're the seeker or one of the beaters responsible for fucking up the seeker. If you're the Keeper or Chaser, you'll just play wizard soccer for a few minutes until the seeker catches the snitch and invalidates everything you've done.

    The Astronomy Thread

Yeah, agreed. I don't know how common it is for high earth orbit satellites to have ellipictal orbits that intersect with Starlink, but if they did that orbital mass could displace into high earth orbit if a starlink keppler syndrome btfo'd anything that descended into LEO with enough velocity...

    The Astronomy Thread

The comforting thing about Starlink satellites is that they have a ~5 year orbital lifespan. So if a massive disaster happened creating a Kessler syndrome that made those low earth orbit altitudes a nightmare, I think ? it'd work itself out in a few years. Then again I don't know what kind of...

This is the right position to take, especially when it looks like big features like Quidditch were planned and then probably booted to DLC. Many gamers are morons who don't understand how a feature can be planned as part of the main game and then bounced out of the release during crunch time...

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

Yeah, it's weird that it's able to come up with syntax correct code for fairly difficult questions and not have mathematically coherent answers for basic addition.

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

Sentience is an awkward bar to set for an AI because it's more philosophical than anything grounded in biology, science, physics, math etc. Personally i think most humans have a pretentious view of their own sentience. Like they aren't just a bunch of lizard survival instincts with a thin veneer...

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

The best way to get a chatbot to pass turing is probably to make it stupid and annoying. "Lol what idk" is the most human response to most questions.

I'm no Harry Potter lore nerd but the concept of house elves is pretty gross. Fantasy slaves like familiars, elementals etc is common as you say, but House Elves are portrayed as the most pitiable version in that they are generally mistreated, love being mistreated and would hate to be set free...

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

An example of "bullying" is to ask it a sentence that makes no sense. It'll make it fit. This kind of reads like the question a protagonist in a movie uses to get out of an impossible robot-prisoner situation. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LogicBomb

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

Sure, but it can get things wrong in egregious ways that would be an obvious indicator that it's a chatbot and not a human. Even if ChatGPT was trained to pretend to be a human, if it fucks up questions like this it can fail the Turing test. What's interesting is that the January version of...

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

No, but chatbots built for the same purpose as ChatGPT never will because they don't attempt to act like a human, just provide useful responses. I imagine that a chatbot with the same level of technological backing as ChatGPT could if it was designed too though, as long as the evaluator wasn't...

    Hogwarts Legacy

Agree 100% A story that is generally internally consistent is waaay more interesting than one where the characters or systems act outside the way they're set up. Once a universe goes off the rails it stops being something worth considering and is just an amusing diversion until it ends.
