Bill Gates Says AI Will Be As Dangerous as Nukes

I think The Matrix spells out a very likely scenario. Not necessarily just the doomsday part -- the bits about the humble beginnings of AI, the attempts at coexistence, the arrogance of humanity in attempting to segregate the AI when it grows too quickly for our comfort, and the eventual...

Just tried this and it fails a lot more than Chrome does on the same system. -2 out of 10, wouldn't bang.

Hey, look what I found: alexkasko/openjdk-unofficial-builds · GitHub And yes, it runs Minecraft. Just tried it. You have to download theold Windows installer, though, as the new one downloads Java 8 on its own and uses it as a runtime without installing it to the system.

Vivaldi - new internet browser for power users

Any idea if any Chrome extension will work this way? I might be bothered to give it a try if so. No Ghostery and I'm out. Edit: The answer is yes. So, basically, Vivaldi is Chromium with a new face and some tweaking. Why it won't load a packed .crx, I have no idea.

A disturbingly large number of business apps use Java. At home, I rarely use it, if ever. At work, I use it daily, because I have no choice.

IMO, it's a simple enough equation. 1. Are there multiple users on the PC(s) in question? Do they have the potential to be morons? 2. Are you a moron? If you answered Yes to either question, use ESET/MWB Pro. If not, noscript, a healthy understanding of computer security and a lack of...

AMD and Intel were toe to toe for a while. This hasn't been the case in years and AMD is a fair stretch behind now. The only thing they have going for them is that they're dirt cheap. I'd spend for the i5 knowing that the system will be much better as a result, and will last longer. PassMark...

Final Fantasy XIV (Guide in first post)

Well, yeah, but that's raiding. I'm excluding that. I'm also excluding the story elements of Coil, because quite frankly, filthy casuals like me won't see them (for a while yet).

You can only do so much for sub-$500. Proprietary and a shit PSU are trade-offs for cheap and pre-built. And if the PSU dies (or kills the rest of the system), it's under warranty for some period of time, so there's that, at least.

AV has been this way for many years, certainly before most other software. Given that their updates are near daily, it's a reasonable business model.

If you don't like the story elements of a FF game, I have no idea why you're paying to play this. It's a FF game. Yes, there is dialogue. When you get to 50 and you're either raiding or doing dailies/whatnot, there is no more story to speak of, so just tough it out for now.

Oh, I don't know about MMOs being dead. Wannabe Youtube celebrities have taken the idea of providing decent guides and reviews and have sprinkled in all this other bullshit, trying to be the next big thing. If you're American, yes. If not, no, unless I ship to somewhere-near-the-border and pick everything up there, which is potentially doable for me. I applied for their free month and the wife and I are going to look through their kids' stuff. If it's anywhere near as good as it looks, we'll...

Draegan, Teljair, I see you're looking at potentially having some tech/dev types involved here, but since that's kinda what Teljair already does here, I'm wondering what would be involved. I have little to no interest in creating content. It's not my thing, and with a lack of interest comes a...

    Dear Kanye

According to this year's awards, no, not so much. Beck is nowhere near as "famous" as Beyonce at this point, mostly because he tends to shut the fuck up and actually make music. You know, because he's busy writing and playing it all and doesn't have nearly as much time to open his mouth in front...

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

Yeah, I don't pirate nearly as much TV as I used to. Pretty much everything we want to watch is either on Netflix or Hulu Plus. I think I'll skip Amazon Prime, though, because it isn't worthwhile if it's the weakest of the three as far as streaming content goes. I just wish I could reliably get...

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

That's a shame. Netflix/Hulu Plus aren't quite enough. Like 80% of what I want, I guess. Anyone know if Amazon Prime is worth it if you already have Netflix and Hulu Plus? I'm not entirely sure what it brings to the table and I don't really want to pay to find out. Free shipping is somewhat...

Yeah, gotta reboot in between removal and re-installation of drivers. It's Windows, man. Some things never change. The recovery driver is part of the whole package. Good to hear that it resolved itself in the end, though.

That's usually solvable by removing/rebooting/reinstalling the Apple Mobile Device package under Windows. It's happened to me a few times. It's a Windows driver issue and it's a pain in the ass, yes.

No real world hit for most games on i5 vs. i7. If you're doing other things with the box (like compiling code, video editing, running virtual machines, etc), go for the additional cores, otherwise there's no point. If it's strictly a gaming box, you're likely not going to be using them anyway.

Heh, that's just weird. I don't know why they'd even make that unless it was specifically to connect to something that could switch the signal for you. I guess some KVMs could do it. Who knows. For $3, yeah, who cares.

Do the adapters support DVI-I as well? That would make more sense. You can run DVI-I to VGA as long as the DVI end is analog-capable.

Bill Gates Says AI Will Be As Dangerous as Nukes

Not quoting the rest. No, I am not in the AI field for a living. I'm an IT type (fairly senior at this point), and at the end of the day, I work for some of the same people you do. Correct, I don't have any authority over this issue. That's kinda exactly what I said in my last post. You know...

Okay, so this is the part where you start to get butthurt about something. Who cares what I do for a living? Does that have some sort of impact on my right to an opinion? Who cares if Bill Gates thinks something or other about AI? When he was young, he was a barely passable software developer...

That doesn't excuse the rest of that stuff up there. You know, the bits where I think you're wrong? You keep talking about "experts", and I'm trying to get the point across that today's "experts" aren't necessarily right. So, whatever frame of reference they construct may also be entirely...

Bill Gates Says AI Will Be As Dangerous as Nukes

Yes, but at the end of the day, all of this (including the changes our body is going through) is still quantifiable. I would argue that what you've been trying to get across is that these things arenot currently quantifiable by us. This is not the same as "this is impossible". I don't think...
