It's a bus speed thing. SSDs do show an improvement in speed over 7200RPM drives (of course), but the improvement is marginal and isn't generally worth the price increase. I seem to remember reading that the PS3 doesn't support TRIM, either, so the speed of your SSD will suffer over time anyway...
