It can go any number of ways, but I can see it going: 1. AmeriCorp Space Mines brings in asteroid, makes trillions over the next few years. 2. IndiaCorp Space Mines launches giant rickshaw to bring asteroid in, obliterates Bangalaru and a large portion of the Tanami desert (nobody notices). 3...

Yeah I think if it was done "properly", no matter who goes out to park a massive rock near earth would have to be vetted by US, Russia, China, India and EU (if it exists, lol) space agencies (and more) to verify they weren't a bunch of jackasses. AS for the weaponization ramifications, who...

Definitely worth the risk! It seems like it didn't take much to bring you from a hemisphere ending event to a city-ending event though. I'm not an astrophysicist but I feel like the risk of putting it at a lagrange point or in some earth intersecting orbit and putting it on the moon seems...

Wasn't Columbus funded by Spain? The first profitable asteroid mining operation might be done by a private company, but I think it'll be partially funded by the State, and will certainly use tech that the State did a lot of the initial research on. Even SpaceX, which is sort of the...

I think people go with this chain of logic: 1. We need to colonize other planets. 2. The moon is the closest large celestial body we can colonize. 3. Let's find reasons to colonize the moon. 4. ??? 5. We're now an interstellar species. It's like figuring out how to make a sustainable colony can...

What kind of impact are we looking at if a building sized asteroid in LOE gets its orbit fucked up and the orbit decays until it falls to the earth? It seems like asteroids with long orbits around the sun are traveling much faster relative to the earth than our orbitting satellites. It'd be a...

Doesn't the egg contribute like, half the DNA or something? Personally I'd rather combine my natural DNA with a genetically superior one rather than clone myself. Sexual reproduction is common for a reason and let's be real here, beyond being an amazing gamer and software developer I don't...

I don't know what would be more desirable, buying eggs from genetically superior women or creating your own. I really don't know what the ramifications are of wanting a daughter created from Mila Kunis' and your DNA.

    The Feminism Thread

My opinion is that there's a threshold of content amount and relation to "politics" that was crossed in yesterday's political thread that warranted a thread split. When I logged on and saw the same massive text walls from Lithose, Mist's feminist stuff, a bunch of personal accounts of feminism...

    The Feminism Thread

I don't even disagree with this, but with nearly nothing actually happening regarding feminism in a political or legislative sense, the amount of back and forth over the same bullshit over and over while actual political discussions are happening is pretty tiresome. I think if we can harvest helium-3 and water from the moon it becomes much more attractive. But before that tech exists I don't see the value in creating and supplying a moon base. And that's something that's on the table for the next 10-20 years.

Where is the tech at with moon water harvesting? Do we have an idea of how much energy, raw materials and machinery we would need to extract a litre of water from the moon?

Technologically? No. Politically? Yes. Thing about asteroid mining is that it's most valuable when you mine resources that can be utilized in space. In today's environment one can imagine parking a 10 ton brick of ice outside the ISS and scraping off ice cubes to sell like a cosmic lemonade...

Trucks are often around 20k lbs, trailers 10k and typical loads are up to 50k. So 80k lbs is typical. So if we're talking about a 25k lbs battery, it'll be much heavier. We'll see what Tesla produces.

Looking forward to seeing this. I feel like you need enough mileage such that a trucker never has to stop because he's out of juice. Not sure if many truckers drive for the full 11 consecutive hours usually, or it's closer to 4-6. So you might need a truck that can run for 8+ hours before...
