In a way I get the pacing so far. It's the "logical" order of the events that would actually go down in a case like this. But after the first episode it does feel a bit like a bait and switch.

Yeah this show isn't even that great. It's nowhere close to Veep or Silicon Valley. I still watch it because the NFL is awesome and this really is Entourage with sports, but those ratings confound me.
