It's 1000 per WQ and I don't think it depends on quality. I'm flying around with a blue follower right now and getting 1000 per WQ at least.

That's the way to do it, with Meatball on my alts I'll fly around and pick off all the quick/easy WQs (like wardens), then send him off on his mission for the night.

To be fair if you just got him the fastest way to level him is by knocking out a bunch of WQs with him as your bodyguard.

Out of all the old raids, Siege of Org is by far the longest one to farm. 14 bosses and lots of travel as you said. Throne of Thunder is incredibly long too. I'd strongly suggest on stocking up on Bear Tartare if you're farming any old instances, it makes them go much faster.

The changes they made is you have to be in the top 3 on your realm to turn in the event. Thanks to CRZ there are likely not even 3 people from your realm in the zone so it's way easier to complete now. Set your hearth at the inn in Booty Bay for a quick turnin when you finish.
