You can do it in a single trip with the right mods, weapons and build. We have done it once in a duo. Beam rifle + hot shot + full damage build will destroy him.

Are officer invites bugged in classic? My guild officers have rights but it won't allow them to invite.

Make sure you have on light armor, you'll save more stamina when rolling and dodging. That fight was the fucking worst when I played, now he's not so bad.

I've only ever done that fight with friends, maybe spend more time downing adds then plink away. Also try DoTs on the boss so you can unload your mod on them then focus adds, rinse and repeat.
