The Smith one was pretty good until the dog dies and he tries to commit suicide by vampire. The second the woman and kid show up, the movie takes a giant dump. Cats can catch you birds and mice to eat. Then you will die from bird flu and bubonic plague.

They can outrun humans, which becomes helpful when people eventually devolve into roaming tribes of cannibals.
