The Fermi Paradox -- Where is everybody?

Right, but there is a difference between individual and collective survival. We can presume that for a civilization to arise, the species in question would have to be social to a degree. Civilization by its definition is essentially a collective work. Once you get to that point, there are...

The Fermi Paradox -- Where is everybody?

Right. Basically the only practical reason for sub-light travel on massive time frames is it is perceived as a way to ensure the continuation of the species. There would be virtually no other benefit, unless your civilization is okay with your FedEx delivery of Unobtanium only arriving once...

Yes, it is based off book 4, although they will be using some of the book 5 subplots to help flesh out the Sol system events (like Bobby back on Mars). Book 4 is when they visited the alien planet, yes. It's the first human colony after the ring network opened, although it wasn't officially...

You might want to consider day trips as well if you get the rail pass. Nara is close to Kyoto (that's the place with the tame deer and a godzilla sized Buddha statue). Also by bullet train, Hiroshima is like 2 hours from Kyoto. Worth a day trip to see the Hiroshima memorial and museum.

Country also changes it a lot. China and Europe seem to be more in the 1984 direction, whereas the US leans more heavily in the Neuromancer direction.

Final Fantasy XIV (Guide in first post)

Once you get used to the systems in the game, it is pretty straight forward. You can totally play as a casual player and get lots of enjoyment from the game. The community in this game is also pretty friendly to new people and are willing to help out if you have questions.

The Fermi Paradox -- Where is everybody?

If they were doing it. Which leads to a couple conclusions: 1) No one out there is capable of doing it 2) We're assuming these are "inevitable" apex developments, but the reality is they aren't Honestly it could be a little of 1 and 2, but trying to assume stuff like Dyson Spheres and Shkadov...

The Fermi Paradox -- Where is everybody?

I agree that it would be hard. There was an interesting TV special a while back that put forth a scenario where a pulsar is observed heading towards Earth and we have 80 years before it gets here. The governments of the world agree to basically pool all their resources to make a gigantic...

The Fermi Paradox -- Where is everybody?

Although when you look at those numbers, that is a pretty insane period of time for a species. Homo Sapiens have only been around for a hundred thousand years, give or take. Advanced hominids for a few million years. There are species on Earth that have been around for timescales like that...

    Mortal Kombat (2021)

This one? Sorta. The "grounded" MK short on Youtube was basically a fan made movie to try to drum up excitement/investment in such a project. Warner Bros eventually I think hired him to make some web episodes (MK: Legacy) to serve as a leadup to the MK reboot earlier this decade. They...

Right, a civilization that has completely exhausted/is close to exhausting all local resources basically has to look elsewhere or die/risk collapse. So if we look at vast timescales, eventually you have to look outside your solar system, although such a move with limited speed would be more...

But it wouldn't be practical to expand with that level of tech in most cases if the lifeform has a limited lifespan on par with a human, plus it would require engineering technology that could deal with centuries of deep space travel without support. It's not impossible, but neither is rowing...

You're right, it just takes one. But on a cosmic scale, you need more data. You can't draw a conclusion with 50 years of extremely limited data/observational capabilities out of billions. A civilization could have been hypothetically beaming transmissions to us for 5,000 years, but if those...

Plus you have to factor in moving past radio eventually. Even in The Expanse, they start to use laser "tight beam" communication over radio. And that doesn't even get into possible modes of quantum communication. Radio is potentially a stepping stone, but it doesn't mean it continues to get...

We’ve been to the moon is the point. We haven’t stayed long, but we’ve put boots there. While the moon and Mars have some basic similarities in terms of long term habitation, they’re also extremely different to the point where moon isn’t a required precursor to Mars

In theory vs practicality. If they are a limited life span species, then your only options are a) stasis tech b) artificial augmentation (ie, cyborgs c) generation ships. It also makes assumptions that Dyson Spheres/Shkadov engines are a natural progression of technology for a highly advanced civilization, which is honestly kind of arrogant (and in turn, a hallmark of humanity lol).
