Why all the Emulated EQ servers if EQ is free to play?

First let me see if I understand what you are saying: You don't like P99 because the expansions stop at Velious? Are you saying you want them to stop at a different point? You also mention P99 as stagnant. Do you mean that it is stagnant because once it reaches Velious you can't go through...

Why all the Emulated EQ servers if EQ is free to play?

I understand what you are saying. But I wasn't referring to emu developers when I was talking about being risky and innovative. The only thing they risk is time. I was talking about other AAA game companies that manage to be risky and innovate and still have the same constraints SOE has...

Why all the Emulated EQ servers if EQ is free to play?

I'm not entirely sure what you are suggesting, but I agree with you entirely that both P99 and EQ Live progression have their own problems. For the record I don't play P99 and haven't in some time, but it doesn't change the fact that there is great demand for an "early EQ" server done right...

Why all the Emulated EQ servers if EQ is free to play?

I can tell you in a nutshell why several thousand people play emulated servers instead of EQ- despite the fact that EQ is free. First, to much of the emu audience, the "free" part isn't even a factor. Let's start with the fact that most people playing emu servers are playing P99. Most...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I calculated an approximate guideline range if he was actually federally convicted of wire fraud. Assuming he has no notable criminal history, his guideline range would be around 33 to 41 months in prison, followed by 1 to 3 years of supervised release. I'm not suggesting he is guilty of...

Looks interesting, but I don't see anything about custom content creation (items, NPCs, cities, towns, etc). What I see is the ability to modifyrules, settings, and eventsin an already built world. While that seems cool, it won't be much like NWN if you can't make your own dungeons, mobs...

I'm not opposed to learning and I do tend to think analytically. I'm also not too concerned about investing a lot of effort into it. Frankly, I just wouldn't know where to begin or what to focus on. I've asked around a few times and there doesn't seem to be a very organized method of learning...

Ok, here's my question. If I subscribe to this deal, can I build a multiplayer game without knowing code? Will I have all the tools I need to set one up from the ground up? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to the technical aspects of this stuff- I just remember something Denault said about...

Movies That Would Be Made, If You Could Make It Happen

Clavell's Shogun. Done right- which means breaking it into two feature length films, using Ken Watanabe as Toranaga, and using a heretofore previously unknown actor as Blackthorne. Shogun would make one of the most epic movies of all time, without a doubt. I liked Clavell's Tai-Pan as...

To be honest, I think one of the reasons they have nothing to show for it is because the VR team is missing the same things that you guys had 22 years ago- energy (or inspiration) and passion to make a game. McQuaid has passion- that much is certain. But it seems like he is more passionate...

    The Elder Scrolls Online

Thanks. That is kind of... difficult to understand, but if I'm reading it right it looks like they are attempting to limit cash shop purchases to "fun" items and character services. I'm skeptical on what "fun items" means, but it's good to know that they are trying to avoid "pay to win."

Sorry, I'm sure this has been discussed quite a bit, but for the sake of getting a succinct answer- ESO does not have a monthly sub but has a cash shop where you can buy in-game goods, etc, right? If yes to the cash shop, is there any limit to what you can or can't buy in the cash shop?

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

You've managed to miss the point of my argument entirely. Here it is distilled: 1. "Difficulty" is subjective, largely because the definition of difficulty is varied/subjective. 2.IFyou subscribe to the way I defined "difficulty" for mmos, then, yes, I believe most reasonable people would...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Listen, defining "difficulty" in video games is one of those stupid arguments that can go back and forth forever because, ultimately, it's subjective. I'm not going to labor my point for that reason, but I'm going to say this. Progress in early EQ was clearly DIFFICULT. If you disagree with...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Yeah, we definitely are not going to agree here. Difficulty as I defined it is absolutely old school. One of the problems/failings with modern mmos is that the have failed to challenge players enough. There are many examples of this, but death penalty/corpse loss is a really, really clear one.

You can obviously debate endlessly about distilling what "old school" means, but I think the three features you name are pretty safe. Add to that: 4. Difficulty- as defined by risk/reward ratio, player vs. player competition, and a meaningful death penalty. As to whether you can make a...

This is a great example of one of the traps so many mmos fall into. On its face what you are saying makes absolutely perfect sense. It seems like it would be BAD for some zones to be more popular than other zones. In reality, its actually a GOOD thing. It's perfectly ok for "most" people to...

Pretty confidant the game is going to get made regardless of how the kickstarter ends. A better kickstarter just means the game gets made easier/faster/better. There is ample reason to support the kickstarter if you want the game to succeed but no need to get down in the dumps if it starts...
