About the PS4 launching later in Japan: I am not sure the japanese gamers are that annoyed considering it would launch with precious little japanese games on it. We have trouble getting excited by a launch spearheaded by Killzone, so imagine how it would have been for them!

I love the Kevin Butler commercials, but I think the whole faux-cheap comedy approach works better to energize an established product than to launch a new one. Core message + originality + sense of awe is a better mix for launch, and this commercial and the previous one with the monologue are...

It's one thing for the PS4 to check the header file of a PS3 BluRay game disk to allow you to play the downloaded PS4 version of the same title and it's another completely to run the code that is on said PS3 disk.

I suspect the point of this beta phase is to test the network infrastructure, so the ability of the testers is irrelevant. Testing the actual gameplay and balance was/is probably done in house or with, as you suggested, a few handpicked elite players (most likely all of them from Japan).
