I find I've gotten a little better by playing 1v2 matches against the AI during matchmaking. Usually only get a minute or so in, but it's helped.

As I understand it, you define a polygon as your play area and then it creates the biggest square within it as your defined play area that chaperone keys off of (and then all devs design their games for the square), if that's helps any.
