2 years later... the almost sad state of MMOs in the new era

Not that lore makes a damned bit of difference in any game, let alone an MMO, but a Markov chain text generator seeded with Pokemon fan fiction could produce a story more compelling than LoL's.

They wouldn't even have to do any new writing since this show's dialogue already reads like generic quest text from a videogame.

    World of Warcraft: Classic

They weren't recreating the game from documents, everything they needed (code, data, assets) was backed up. If they'd had to do even half the work the emulation scene has put into the game there never would've been a WoW Classic.

Star Citizen Online - The search for more money

We almost got Privateer Online, and I guarantee that would've been at least 334 million times better than whatever SC ultimately becomes. Anyone who remembers the Strike Commander fiasco nearly 30 years ago shouldn't be surprised at the state of Star Citizen; it was the point when Roberts'...

Bartle claims that the guy who coined the term "massively multiplayer" actually did so to describe the type of game you mentioned in your first example, a larger session-based type instead of a "world" game. https://books.google.com/books?id=SK5PCwAAQBAJ&pg=PA123#v=onepage&q&f=false He goes...

Well, there's the plain fact that the former has a playerbase only 1/8th that of the latter, regardless how it's partitioned. I don't consider population density to be the defining criterion.

Knock an M off the acronym then, since "massive" as a designation will no longer be applicable in any sense.

There will never even be a successor to WoW, let alone something that kills it. The era of the MMORPG is over, it's been over, it's not coming back. The "next big thing" will be some non-game virtual world a la Second Life (only shittier, if such a thing is possible) integrated with social media.

Don't quit your day job as a cardiac surgeon just yet, @Sadre Spinegnawer. If there's incentive to multibox in your game then you've already lost by design (literally). Attempting to limit/restrict boxing after the fact will only earn you the contempt and resentment of your players, those who...

This entire genre is creaking under the weight of 25-year old game systems. All paths in an ARPG inevitably lead to the same destination, flying there on autopilot while everything on the screen is autogibbed and the fraction of loot that isn't garbage is autocollected. Wake me when we land.
