no there are a ton of viable classes / playstyles. if you try league when it starts on friday you should spend some time on the class forums and find a build that looks cool to you with "budget" or "league starter" in the name. It will give you a guide to follow so you don't get too frustrated...

ya as deathwing said they ramped up map boss hp so it's a curve building up to guardians. It's less efficient to kill them given they don't give anymore items than before (at least that we know of, there are always changes that don't make it into the changelog)
