Basically I"ll sum up my previous long post. UO+WOW+DDO = WIN. There.

uh, if 90% of the people did the same thing than thats balance by default no? I didn"t say it was a "good" balance and for the record I never used a melee weapon in UO. :P

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I don"t see how skill systems are any harder to balance than a class system...you think WoW is balanced? hah. UO was balanced because there was a skill cap...you just couldn"t be pro in everything. Sure you get alot of fotm, but who cares if it is fun? Make enough interesting skill tree"s...

^^ sure would like to see RA put out a book (or 2 or 3) before the game is out...would love to get into the lore via that setting first.

Reputation sucked I agree, that was a primary factor into us turning into murderers. Heck I remember having 20+ minute fights spanning over the entirety of Despise, ported in Poison Elementals. All sorts of good fun. Nothing will ever compare to how they absolutely destroyed the game with...

Yah, I"ll admit I was a bastard...we had several port points in each dungeon, we"d typically port in, hide, look for an unsuspecting group then pounce. After a while anti-pk"s were out for our blood and this is where having a pre-planned teleport pattern and hiding came in so handy. People...

^^ I never hacked and once they introduced Murderers I was top 2 on the leaderboard on baja for a long, long time. (my friend being #1 :P) It wasn"t about hacking, though I"d admit my ping was good...it was about choices and abilities. The ability to teleport to a pre-planned area at any time...

so says you :P I loved my archer/mage in UO and I don"t care if 90% of the people played the same thing...just let pvp come down to skill = win...none of this rock, paper, scissors crap.

I hate class systems, go with a skill system and let us make our own characters please.

Steroids and HGH are both illegal drugs yes (edit - unless prescribed by a doctor)...but thats my point, they have no reason to bring Clemens to trial unless it was to put away someone like his trainer. Illegal drug or not, a conviction on something like use would be a slap on the wrist. I...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

^^ Yes, because DOING steroids is not a huge federal crime...do a little research on how close Clemens was to McNamee and how Clemen"s career rocketed to stardom after he started training with him. (yah bad pun I know) I actually think if you took Clemens to court you would have an excellent...

The Clemens evidence stems from the testimony of his personal trainer, Brian McNamee. He says he personally injected Clemens. This guy is also a big time scum bag. "McNamee helped create extensive workouts for both Clemens and Andy Pettitte. McNamee was hired as the strength and conditioning...

"Curt Schilling challenged Roger Clemens to come out from behind his prepared statement, calling on Clemens to surrender the final four Cy Young Awards he has won unless he obtains a retraction for his citation in the Mitchell Report as a user of steroids and human growth hormone. In a...

Have a separate server in each cluster solely for mob AI. Heck computers have come so far in the past 5 years...quad core those suckers out and go to town.

Hey this is where a believable system of NPCs having real lives in the game world comes in...just because an NPC wants you to kill another NPC does that mean this NPC will be at the same location 24/7? Does he/it not go home? Is he eating and distracted or is he just sitting in the same spot to...

Hey I figured some random joe dev started a thread asking what we wanted to see in an MMO but right here we have a known quantity in a guy that actually has told us who he is, has a company, and is actively creating a product...might as well put down our thoughts somewhere they might be useful

I thought the Splitpaw Saga was excellent and had EQ2 put this much effort into every single part of their game I"d probably still be playing. (well outside of the combat and insane amount of instancing)

This is EXACTLY what I"m talking about with the quest delivery mechanics and exactly why a large percentage of players in a multi player game skip quest text. Here you have a best selling author penning your game lore and story, coming up with interesting and complex quest stories, but they...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Yes great, wow does a good job of this at times, why not go further than they did and do this everywhere? Why not deliver these quests via an interesting mechanic instead of a stationary quest giver that wants you to read his text to activate the encounter?
  24. Daezuel

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Perhaps its not outside of the box as obviously you CAN find examples of this at work in todays MMOs...the quest in Nagrand you are talking about is a great example of this...heck I REMEMBER that quest because it was not another boring quest hub type of quest. I guess the point is that is an...

Random encounters complete with scripting, heck I"ll use Drizzt for an example. In the Dark Elf Trilogy he would go out on patrols with his classmates...put the player characters in the role of a patrol for fast, easy experience. The players accept the patrol, the server runs a script that...

Here is one alternative, how about a gladiator arena? You log in, head over to the arena, strap on your helmet and sword and prepare for a randomly generated encounter complete with cheering/jeering crowd. The ideas are out there, its up to the developer to look outside of the box to find them.

I think I pointed out that it was only for 50-60 players at peak, however just because I can do something doesn"t mean its NOT doable on a much larger scale. I believe with proper planning and a robust scripting engine you can do much more than I was able to do with the nwn engine. (most...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I had no instances on my nwn server and I used scripting and cut scenes everywhere I possibly could...now granted this was only for 50-60 people at any one time, but I was also only leading a team of 2-3 at any time (including myself) and spent money only on the hardware and bandwidth required...
  29. Daezuel

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Ah but when you are designing your game from the ground up you put in the necessary scripting tools to make this sort of design easy. Cutscenes rendered by the engine, events triggered by location/quest progress/randomness. Are we talking about a next gen, take the world by storm type of MMO...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I still say you can do better than this... Instead of having an NPC standing there waiting for you to see whats going on say your group is involved in a tavern brawl started by some rowdy drunks. You get arrested, the magistrate then comes to the cell and requires you to perform services for...

Did you play Lotro at all? They started the game off in just the sort of scripted experience I was talking about...this is what Lotro actually did very right. Then you get to the quest hubs...YAWWWWNNN...oh boy we haven"t seen this before have we. 20 NPC"s standing around with exclamation...
  32. Daezuel

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I disagree...the reason I brought up delivery quests (and generic kill quests) is really the method of delivery that most MMO"s use for telling their stories. A large percentage of players are interested mostly in leveling fast and to that effect will usually skip through the quest text only...

Each character has a set of variables that can be saved to the server...this structure is already in place concerning equipment and stats. At any stage of a multi-part script the server saves this characters state. You log off, you come back right where you left off. The above example was...
  34. Daezuel

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

^^ I get your points, however, how about scripted events that move the story forward instead of quest text that will get ignored by a large percentage of players. Say a character reaches a certain level or a certain area of a zone, a script is engaged that has an NPC or two, or 10 (whatever)...

This reminds me...while designing quests please make them have a choice which can affect your character or the world going forward. All to often now I find myself just clicking through quest texts without bothering to read them at all and it really has nothing to do with the quality of the text...

As long as my avatar can sport a bloody sock I"m all in!! jk That video was an interesting little piece...I don"t see how anyone cannot take serious a 60 million dollar investment into a billion+ industry. You"ve got all of our attentions and heck, its still probably 3 years away. I, for...

I don"t see how anyone could possibly blame you...look, we all know its about money. Whenever there is big money in something, people will and do find a way to cheat.
