That's kind of what I was getting at. The weed barrier is obvious, but once dirt starts accumulating on top of it, you've got a place for weeds to grow. But sand under the rocks might be enough to dissuade weeds from growing since they won't be able to root well.

Speaking of rock gardens, does anyone know a good way to prevent weeds in them? I haven't done it yet, but eventually I'll be xeriscaping my front yard because I'm tired of mowing the lawn there (will keep the back). But I don't want to have to pick weeds out of rocks every year that inevitably...
