It's possible to get an exalt attack which is generally considered easier than an alien attack, but yes, it's a full base defense every time it happens. Long War is serious business. SRS BSNS

In Long War the base defense is no longer a scripted part of the central arc, and like the originals your base can be attacked multiple times.

Only certain council missions and dlc missions. Base defense has timed drop-ins, which are potentially a lot more difficult.

The flip side being that on higher difficulties, early DLC/council missions would be damn near impossible with timed or random drop ins, instead of scripted ones. At least Long War randomized the scripts a bit for some of them.

Yes, the novels are absolutely terrible by adult standards. I believe Weis and Hickman own Dragonlance now because WotC didn't want it anymore. Dragonlance Fifth Age did irrevocable damage to the popularity of the setting, and the pseudo-retcon of the Sixth Age wasn't enough to get interest back.

It's possible to get rushed a bit at the very beginning of Friends in Low Places, but what you should be doing is hunkering down at the beginning for several turns to deal with the first wave of drop ins + any patrols. Only then do you start moving forward to trigger more drop ins.

Except combo decks like freeze mage or inner fire priest are fair, and allow your opponent chances to interact with you and interfere with the combo. Decks like leeroy miracle and patron give you minimal chance to interact with them and basically no response to the combo. All because of charge.
