The most effective AV nowadays is a few browser extensions and having half a brain. I use ABP and Ghostery (and noscript when I use FF) with MSE and Malwarebytes. I only run scans when MSE prompts me to and run Malwarebytes every 6 months or so. Haven't had any real infections in over 10 years...
