How dare you besmirch Gambit's good name. *As I look at the first appearance of gambit in a frame on my wall*. He was my boy growing up.

    Winter 2024 Anime Thread

All caught up on Solo Leveling after being out of town a bit. It still continue to be great. I am curious about so many things, but mainly the job change quest. I wonder if it is an old school upgrade (squire > knight) or traditional (assassin > mage). Who knows, it could even be something...

    Road House

That was CGI? I thought the reason the choreography and punches were so bad was because it was actually Malone. Just assumed filming was from before he lost some weight recently.

Yes, but the suspenders, they are hand painted.

    Damsel (2023)

Eh, Dragonslayer is of my youth so probably rose colored glasses. I do think that old 'bad' movies with practical effects still do better than CGI similar to what was in Damsel. You are just well aware it is CGI and a green screen and it is very fake. Similar to the Aladdin remake, the...

    Damsel (2023)

Not much to say about this, wasn't great. We didn't turn it off, but it went to background mode pretty quick. The CGI and environments were alright in some areas. Shohreh Aghdashloo is a good dragon voice. Aside from that, pretty forgettable.

    Spaceman

Agreed, we thought this was enjoyable as well. It is the correct type of slow. Sandler is really doing a bang up job in his later years. Dano / Hanus sounded very similar to Frank from Donny Darko but I got over that pretty quickly.

    Dune: Part Two (2023)

I'm still chewing on this one, I liked it a bunch and it was definitely a theater watch. It was a spectacle and pretty, but it fell slightly short due to coming in with pretty high expectations, so probably my fault. I enjoyed Part One more than Part Two, but the first half of Part Two more...

Only 3, that's a shame, with that count I doubt they will even make it through (or even start) the last mage test. I was at least hoping for some resolution on that front. It is odd to watch Denken sometimes. His style, voice actor, and mannerisms would all make me think he's a baddy in any...

Watched Frieren based on the praise here, this show is an enjoyable watch. I can't say exactly what it is, but it hits on multiple levels. It was a bit misleading reading through here, I thought the season was going to be ending at episode 24 so I wouldn't have to wait, woops, now I'm on the...

    Dune: Part Two (2023)

Boo. Hiss. Coming from a non-book reader, I loved the weirding modules as a kid. Even if they weren't supposed to be real, I am going to miss that aspect. Science magic.

I chalked this up to him being the one, or a one. I'm sure other folks will have the ability to level at some point. I am super curious when the island that took out the S rank hunters is going to come into the picture. He seems to be gaining power at an incredibly rapid pace. I think he is...

    Mr. & Mrs. Smith

This show was on the menu over the weekend and we finished it up yesterday. I was initially not terribly interested because I thought it was unnecessary to reboot / spinoff. I enjoyed the series. It is a nice easy watch that has some funny and action. I don't think it came off as woke. Race...

Releasing a 20 minute show only once a week should not be allowed. I started watching this and was pleasantly surprised. I don't know anything about the Manhwa. I just like the silly aspect of seeing player screens and leveling yourself up like in a video game. The hero's journey really has...

    The Beekeeper (2024)

We saw this yesterday for some mindless action movie fun. Mindless action movie fun is what we got. It jumped the shark for me in the last act. Peak perfect ridiculousness in the second with the other call center / FBI. But whatever, I didn't go for things to make sense. I went for Jason...

    Leave the World Behind (2023)

This is a pretty humorous exchange taking place for a movie with an underlying theme of weak societal fabric and people being turned against each other to keep them occupied.

    Rebel Moon (2023)

I wanted to like this movie and was prepared to like nearly any trash put in front of me, but this was a stinker. It was a mish-mash of short stories with no continuity or character depth. Even if each character arc was isolated there wasn't enough material to work with and not have it seem...

Bought 10 packs of Ixalan yesterday because I was at a LGS. Haven't played in probably 10 years or more and have been kicking around getting into Pauper and such for something to do. I pulled Owen Grady. I just don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, I like Jurassic Park, on the other...

    Gen V

I binged this over the past week. The first episode was intriguing and once it got going I was in. I think my favorite episode was 6 / Jumanji. I liked the surreal surroundings and setting inside their memories. Gave a real Secret World vibe. The muppet violence was pretty great, I liked...

    The Equalizer 3 (2023)

Caught this last night. Definitely worth a watch if you liked the other Equalizers. Bad guys die, Denzel is Denzel, nothing complicated going on. I did find putting subtitles on helped quite a bit, even with the English portions as it seemed somewhat quiet / mumbly. My only gripe is the...

I wrote season 2 off after episode 4. I just could not get into the season. I am not terribly interested in Gaal / Salvor / The Mule show or the Constance / Poly / Hober Mallow mess around. I like the Empire arc and Bel Riose (which is basically Empire). I went back in for episodes 5 - 8...

    Cargo (2017)

I feel a bit bad resurrecting such an old thread, but absent a random 'zombie movies on netflix' article this would have flown completely under my radar which would have been a tragedy. This was hands down one of the best 'zombie' movies I have watched. It wasn't so much a zombie movie as...

    Hijack

Perhaps not the most thrilling thriller, but I am keeping up with the show week by week. It has my curiosity piqued. I want to understand the story behind the underlying 'reluctant hijacker' theme. I have more sympathy for most of the hijackers than I thought I would, except old dude and...

    Dune: Part Two (2023)

Well jeez, all this time, I had no idea. I have never read the books, the movie was a past time of my father and I so we just watched. Does that mean Muad'dib is not a killing word then and was also an invention? Good god this is messing with me. We'll see if I like magic sand ninjas more...

    Dune: Part Two (2023)

I was nervous about Chalamet as Paul because of typical younger leading men (slighter figures, weaker voices). He did well in the first part, but being able to yell / give a speech with a powerful voice is pivotal to my immersion. Either he gets it, has a voice coach, or is digitally assisted...

    Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Watched this last night and I do not have much to add that hasn't already been said. Lead crazy mom was great and played the part extremely well. This movie was extremely brutal and gory for 2023. Maybe I have been out of the scene, but I sure didn't expect some of the visuals (eating glass...

I caught up on this S1E1 > Present over the last week or so due to a recommendation from a friend. I am glad I was able to binge through to the end that quickly. I didn't realize it while burning through them, but my wife summed it up perfectly by asking 'What questions have they answered?'...

    Black Mirror

Finished out the season last night. They were all good for what they were. I don't think I can rank them very well, I liked the season overall and I did not think any particular episode was a stinker. #1 / #3 were what I imagine when I watch Black Mirror. The rest were still enjoyable. One...

    Black Mirror

I have watched the first two and I have enjoyed them both. I liked #1 / Joan is Awful more than #2 / Loch Henry. Loch Henry was entertaining, but there was no spice. It could have been any series. Joan is Awful was interesting, playful, and more Black Mirror / Twilight Zone / Outer Limits...

    Star Trek: Picard

The wife and I binged s2 / s3 over the last week or so since s3 was getting such praise online. I wanted to be able to read things again and here we are. I enjoyed s2 as it was at least better than s1. Honestly, the last arboretum sit down with Q / Picard hit me right in the feels. "I am...

    The Artifice Girl (2023)

I saw this at a showing in Austin last night. They did a live Q&A with Franklin Rich (Lead / Writer / Director). I went in to this with no real expectations. I needed to fill a Black Mirror sized hole in my heart and this did the trick. The movie is shot in three parts. The first part was...

    All things Brandon Sanderson

I received my Tress box the day I got the notification Secret Box 2 was available. I was determined to read the hardcover, but broke down and read via kindle. It was a very pretty book (physically). I hope #2 arrives soon or I will break down and read that on kindle as well. The story itself...

Sours were the first type of alcohol where I was able to enjoy the drink. Not sure what is available in the GA area, but check out Wild Ales / Spontaneous Fermentation (ex. Jester King Brewery). These have been really great. I can't describe the sensation, but that jaw clenching sour / tart...

    Knock at the Cabin (2023)

I was all in until Lady in the Water., that was the first miss. I think Unbreakable was his peak. I liked 6th Sense, Signs, and The Village. After that point the only things I liked were in the same universe, Split / Glass, but nothing matches Unbreakable for me.

    Knock at the Cabin (2023)

That is a pretty harsh take, but I am also in the camp of mindlessly throwing my money at Shyamalan hoping to see bits and pieces of the old days. Also in the camp of not knowing there was a book. Overall I think it is worth a watch. I have a couple of base metrics for feeling like a film is...

I'm glad this wasn't just me. It is one of those movies where you seem to be expected to like it because...art. The first act was kind of meh and the second two were somewhat interesting. The only thing keeping me going was finding out who the guy that kept making appearances in each act was...

    Willow

Perhaps that is it, the most charitable view, it is written for curmudgeons with children as a bonding experience. If I had kids that I could be like 'See, this is my jam.' but still be interesting enough for them.

    Willow

Got up to speed with Willow and I am a bit non-plussed. I am not clear who this series is made for. If it were old curmudgeon's like me it would be more gritty, darker, centered around call backs. This version seems to be made for teenagers who were born decades after the movie with a...
